A university-oriented church is an intergenerational congregation that chooses to be close to a major college or university community, including physically, socially, culturally, and spiritually, and actively engages that community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The author completed a series of interviews with leaders of churches around the United States that are focused on secular university communities. Conclusions are drawn from a survey of works on the critical factors that contribute to the process of spiritual formation. Spiritual formation is 'being alive to God' and 'being like God.' That is, a person undergoing spiritual formation grows in intimacy, love, devotion and knowledge of God and becomes more like God in his thoughts, emotions, desires and behavior. The basic factors in this process are: (1) what God has done for the believer, (2) what God has made possible for him/her, and (3) how a Christian responds to what God has done and made possible for him/her. These factors are rooted in God's sovereign grace. God makes spiritual formation possible and works with his people as they go through the process of spiritual formation. This two credit hour academic course on spiritual formation has been developed for undergraduate students at a Christian university. Students will gain valuable knowledge regarding spiritual formation and experience training that is critical for a lifestyle that makes spiritual formation possible. College students completed a survey instrument that demonstrated many anti-Christian hostilities. As a result of that survey, a curriculum was developed to be used among college-bound mid-adolescents to equip them with the necessary tools to defend and stand firm in their Christian faith. Alongside the curriculum, the survey instrument also indicated the need and value for an active mentoring ministry to be employed amongst the church's mid-adolescents. The central mission of the school is to provide post-secondary level training for ministers and missionaries. The primary premise of the work is that communication a sound biblical theology of worship is essential to preparing ministers for genuinely effective Christian life and ministry. The author suggests that most Assemblies of God students operate with a truncated understanding of worship, and therefore need to appreciate the biblical teaching that worship is the ultimate calling of humanity which should encompass every attitude and action of life before God. The thesis project presents a biblical understanding of the interpersonal nature of the worship of God. It includes a brief historical survey of worship practice in the church, and also examines the Old and New Testaments to delineate a New Testament theology of worship that can be applied to contemporary practice. Contemporary issues of corporate worship style and music are analyzed according to constructive biblical principles.
