There are many methods used today to interpret the Bible and decide what verses are descriptive and which are prescriptive.  Most Christians do not know what hermeneutic they use, and often do not apply any hermeneutic consistently.  Further, there are some interpretive methods that are not God-focused and should not be used but are quite common today in the Christian community. Students successfully absorbed the Biblical preaching material, but they did not absorb The seven laws of the learner because of its overwhelming detail. The conclusion was that a course at this level must use books streamlined along the lines of Biblical preaching to avoid 'mental dazzle' or information overload. Then three Black pastors of Richmond, Virginia, were interviewed to receive feedback. To do so, it uses two layers of research strategies: (1) at the national level, a qualitative analysis of two national reports and generalizations made about the American Church and culture and (2) at the regional level, an anonymous survey of individuals and participation in both a nondenominational church plant and an established mainstream congregation. It is the author's contention that the denomination has within its own history and theology the very means by which such renewal may be effected. The Presbyterian controversy of the 1920s-1930s, which split the church over issues of modernism and fundamentalism, will be explored. Focus is on Edward H. Rian, who followed J. Gresham Machen out of the PCUSAS in 1936, but later returned. The reasons for his returning provide a framework for thinking about renewal in the PCUSA today. The number who actually become involved and active members is a small percentage of the visitors who come each Sunday morning. The main consideration is not the number of visitors, but the number of regular attendees who choose involvement and membership or leaving the church. Visitors will continue to come to see what the church might hold for their particular needs and interests. However, assimilation does or does not occur most commonly among those who have begun regular attendance and seek either to deeper in their involvement or turn back and perhaps leave. Specially adapted questionnaires and interview instruments yielded results that are recorded and analyzed in the course of this study. Suggestions are made as to steps how church leaders might take to incorporate and assimilate individuals into service, ministry, and greater membership involvement.
