The purpose is to show that the church, especially the suburban church, needs to rediscover the shalom of God's kingdom in order to develop an effective discipleship that is organic, bottoms-up, and redemptive--a discovery that becomes the engine of change. The project will attempt to show the ineffectiveness, or at best the short-term results of the 'church growth' methodologies that mask as discipleship and offer an urban discipleship as a substitute through a modeled church partnership. The project will be framed in Dr. Eldin Villafane's 'hermeneutical circle of social ethics.' Clarification (chapter 1 -- the ministry challenge) will give the basis for the thesis and the context. Conceptualization (chapters 2 \u0026 3 -- the precedent literature and the theological perspective) will offer a sociological and biblical view of the issue. Confrontation (chapters 4 \u0026 5 -- the project methodology and the systemic response) will present a methodology to develop and define an urban discipleship and assess the suburban church that will lead to proposed changes."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131225460572160,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:44:07.034Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:24:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:56:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ab4609c8-6288-42ec-8591-f5070982f349","accessControl_ssim":["890a928a-bf37-421c-baf8-8cf444c72b84"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Christ at work: exploring the Prayer Book perspective of the workplace"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:24:45Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:04:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["db71ecba-daf1-4952-97d2-3db66d14c553"],"hasLease_ssim":["8cce0033-718a-424c-a643-8dbd7f5d9ead"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paul D Jagoe"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Book of Common Prayer","Episcopal Church","Theology","Vocation","Work--Religious aspects--Christianity","Liturgics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis project explores the Book of Common Prayer to discern whether it contains an adequate theological perspective of the workplace. Episcopalians, like Christians everywhere, are in need of practical theological help to live out their faith in the workplace. The good news is that we have two sources for daily practical Christian living: the Bible and the Prayer Book. Others have explored the Scriptures; this work explores the Prayer Book. It is a common belief in the Episcopal Church that liturgy shapes our faith. It is, therefore, important work to understand the theology of work in the Prayer Book, and to let it become the mold into which our lives are poured. The thesis begins with a theological study of work in the Book of Common Prayer. This study includes two important works that were fashioned for this study. There is a collection of every text in the Prayer Book that deals with work. These texts were then annotated theologically. The second work is a theological compilation which was composed from the annotated texts. These two documents provided the basis for a theological narrative. The literature search explores two areas. First, it focuses on what has been written about theology of work in the Book of Common Prayer. Second, it includes all known American Episcopalian authors who have written on the general topic of Christianity in the workplace. These authors have a number of helpful and interesting ways to reflect on life at work. Finally, a weekend retreat plan is provided. The purpose and format of the retreat are designed to reflect and respond to the various theological points that are found in the Prayer Book. The retreat ends with a Holy Eucharist that is designed to bring liturgical closure to this weekend and to this study."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132003254403072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:56:28.797Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:24:17Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:31:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"34ccb3db-9b37-4da7-a699-7748cc606061","accessControl_ssim":["88801b6b-d2d9-4776-85f6-3c7abe83d036"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The relationship between transformational leadership and church growth in the Korean immigrant church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:24:16Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:39:35Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["af8b0b4b-747f-4b41-8724-d6ed4d66333c"],"hasLease_ssim":["0c693498-ac43-436b-a704-817e56002bf2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Steven W Klipowicz"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Seoung Kook Kim"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Organizational change","Chang, Joseph Young Choon","Korean American Presbyterian Church of Queens (Flushing, NY)","Church work with immigrants"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation examines the relationship between transformational leadership and church growth in immigrant churches. More specifically, the researcher studied the leadership of Rev. Young Choon Chang, the senior pastor of the Korean American Presbyterian Church of Queens (KAPCQ) and the impact of his leadership on the growth of KAPCQ. This research employed qualitative study methods with information obtained through interviews, surveys, documents, and observations. The results of this research are stated below. First, we know that in the late 20th century a fresh wave of leaders transformed nations and organizations with a style of leadership that recent leadership research has defined as transformational leadership. This newly defined leadership model promises to change the very essence of organizations that under inefficient leadership had not looked beyond the status quo. Second, although the term 'transformational leadership' was coined by James MacGregor Burns in 1978, the researcher found that the idea of transformational leadership originated in the concept of man's creation in the image of God and the creation mandate in the Bible. Third, biblical transformational leadership is characterized by a leader with a servant heart and God-sized vision, who fulfills that vision through the power of the Word and Spirit, thereby bringing change to the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130452808957952,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:31:50.177Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:24:17Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:29:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2ab47121-d19e-47c9-b2bd-36ad98f6426f","accessControl_ssim":["ed601ca7-e1bd-4336-90c2-d5d52e076c25"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Youth and church: shall the twain connect? Ministries that could last several years end up lasting just a few years due to unmet expectations and the inability to resolve conflict. In this work, the author contends that long-term ministry is valuable. Ministries lasting ten years or more are normally based on mutual trust between pastor and congregation. The depth of relationship brings trust and stability to a church unknown in shorter pastorates. The literature supports this in both religious and secular fields. Those entering ministry need to be well prepared for the rigors of relationship building, making themselves vulnerable and open, while still maintaining a level of trust and professionalism. The Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches is comprised of over 500 churches and is benefiting greatly from the dedicated service of pastors who are daring to pay the price of long-term service. Their insights were a primary source of research in determining what relational factors are paramount in the building of a marathon ministry. Consulted also were the executive and regional ministers who from their perspectives add much as they consult with search committees, pastors, and congregations in crisis. They serve on the front lines of ministry and understand well the pressures that go along with building a significant relational ministry. Several theological themes were discussed under the heading of the struggle between the sin-led life and the Spirit-led life. Such subjects as submission, partnership, and shepherding were viewed through these lenses. This aided greatly in discerning the primary issues facing churches and pastors as they pursue significant ministry together. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the controllable factors which effect longevity in ministry. Through a combination of research including a biblical/theological and literature review as well as survey research, statistical analysis and descriptive research, this thesis proposes that there are certain controllable factors which, when implemented, make leaving ministry less likely. The result of this thesis/project was the production of a document entitled 'Ministry for Life' which contains the information gathered from the research listed above. The enhancement of computer-based software and improvements in microcomputers and operating systems is enabling the design and development of a wide range of multimedia education compact disc (CD) products. I will use this technology to create an interactive tool that supplements classroom lessons and the individual reading of the textbook Biblical Preaching. Because students have different perceptual strengths, information on the CD-ROM will be presented in a variety of formats. The exercises will incorporate the use of audio and video, as well as written text to accommodate the different ways that people process information. My philosophy in regards to the interactive CD-ROM is that learners should be able to approach learning in a way that takes account of their own learning needs and learning style. Learners will be expected to decide for themselves when to study, their pace of study, the level and type of materials that they use, and the type of learning tasks that they undertake."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131676902948864,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:51:17.564Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:22:48Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:24:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"160ab967-9667-4178-807b-8a2ea9e2d6f7","accessControl_ssim":["7a592e62-7199-4de0-99de-f5b987e1547c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching the whole counsel of God: an examination of the biblical genres in relationship to a preacher's homiletical skills"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:22:47Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:46:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8ab3f079-7842-42c8-9206-87bd43a386cb"],"hasLease_ssim":["6f692c89-8036-4f84-bb8e-25649d11d281"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["J Kent Edwards"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Maurice E Martin"],"keyword_tesim":["Bible--Criticism, Form"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary","Expository preaching","Bible","Preaching--Study and teaching","Bible--Language, style","Literary form"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this thesis-project was to analyze the question: 'Will selected ministers' skills in interpreting and in communicating God's Word improve through an increased understanding of the various literary genres of the Bible?' This writer theorized that a preacher's homiletical skills would increase when exposed to an understanding of the various biblical genres. The theory evolved into the development of a survey-style seminary course taught at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. The data collected from the test instruments administered during the course supported this writer's theory. Chapter 1 of this thesis-project presented the problem and its setting. The problem was the need for a survey-style preaching course from the perspective of the biblical genres, and the setting for the thesis-project was the Leveall College of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary located in Decatur, Georgia. Chapters 2 and 3 detailed the theological framework for this thesis-project. The framework included an understanding of expository preaching, holistic interpretation of the Scriptures, and the incorporation of the biblical genres into the art of expository preaching. Chapter 4 presented the literature review for this thesis project. Sidney Greidanus's The Modern Preacher and the Ancient Text served as the skeletal foundation for this thesis-project. Chapter 5 detailed the implementation of the project, the teaching of a new survey-style preaching course. Chapter 6 presented the conclusions and future recommendations derived from this thesis project."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130001494507520,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:24:39.770Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:22:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:57:22Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b046a8e3-3d06-4e7c-9bcf-3cd81ed1d68c","accessControl_ssim":["6f26945f-07f8-4c22-8925-3a39ce9692a8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The urgent need for biblically, theologically trained women's ministers in American churches today"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:22:47Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:12:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2795af8b-3825-4aa5-90a7-1d5abc596877"],"hasLease_ssim":["4e1302c1-0ca8-49d7-a4be-2c18ade06404"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Alice P Mathews"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sue G Edwards"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Education--Curriculum","Evangelicalism--Women","Dallas Theological Seminary"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work argues for the urgent need for trained women in the conservative evangelical American churches today where often women are excluded from leadership teams.
