Chapter one reviews the history of Emley's Hill United Methodist Church from its founding six years after the founding of Methodism in America in 1784 through the first two hundred years, which were most notably marked by a constant cycle of part-time pastors.  Chapter two lays out the polity framework of the United Methodist Church within which the author had to operate.  Chapter three cites pertinent readings that impacted the author's understanding of the setting and the problems faced.  Chapter four presents the project design, describing the work used in gathering the data necessary for renewal. The psychological theories that are integrated for this thesis include Family Systems Theory, Structural Family Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. The thesis was applied to a young married couple with the use of the Taylor Johnson Temperament Analysis, The Personality Self-Portrait by Multi-Health Systems, and the Prepare/Enrich Inventory assessment tools. Although fingers are being pointed in all directions, no one seems to want to take responsibility for the collapse.  The church has become an organization that treats symptoms, but continues to overlook the problem.  This thesis will look past those symptoms in order to obtain a clear diagnosis of the underlying problem that exists in the church today.  It will be discovered that polarization is that problem.  It is the byproduct of years of theological, doctrinal, and missional conflict between the two dominant political polarities of the church: the progressive liberal polarity and the conservative evangelical polarity. It will be discovered that the agendas of each polarity are guided by a long established set of intrinsic core values. A model that will effectively assist pastors in the mobilization of Christians into twenty-first century church ministry is the team-based model. This model best addresses the ecclesiological mandates within the twenty-first century cultural terrain. The researcher sought to determine if a positive relationship existed between equipping lay leaders with teambuilding models, principles and skills, and developing church workers who are more effective and fulfilled in ministry in Pentecostal churches in the Northeastern United States. This thesis-project was heavily influenced by my church's practice of testimony. After laying a theological foundation for testimony, this thesis-project is designed to assist preachers in preaching clear biblical sermons in which they incorporate personal faith stories. As a result of incorporating faith stories in sermons one would be engaging in a legitimate method to communicate the gospel. Evangelical communities have become fragmented due to a number of destructive behaviors. The result is that a convergence of powerful stresses in directly harming the Brazilian community. Despite the diversity of beliefs and practices, many Brazilian immigrants have been sustained in the displacement and adaptation to American society by regular church attendance.  However, many have burned out. There is a dearth of research addressing addiction and spiritual abuse among members of Brazilian Christian Churches.  The goal of this thesis is to explore and clearly identify how this spiritual abuse has occurred, what its impacts on the community are and to suggest some approaches to heal the victims. First, the paper examines some of the root causes of dysfunction in Brazilian churches. Second, a review of pertinent literature on understanding Brazilians and their faith is presented. Third, systems thinking is used to determine the current level of dysfunction and abuse in order to identify strategies for healing.
