Shiloh is an old, traditional, southern black Baptist institution whose historical prominence emerged because of her dynamic Christian education ministry, of which Sunday School had dwindled to nil. Eager to revitalize the Christian education ministry and energize the persons of auxiliaries and ministry leaders, the pastor petitioned to boost a dying ministry. An initiative involving all church leaders was launched to address the Christian education needs of Shiloh. The timeline for this project was originally six weeks, but developed into an additional seven weeks to more effectively meet the objectives of the project. Phase I of the project focused on assessing the Christian education ministry, defining roles and leadership training. Phase II specifically concentrated on Sunday School teacher training centered on biblical background knowledge, Christian doctrine, teaching methods and addressed a variety of learning styles. This project resulted in a Christian education curriculum within which leadership development and church school teacher training were key efforts in realizing the project's objective."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131138601779201,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:42:44.200Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:18:48Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:58:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b7998459-a29a-4f73-967d-5cd0e36fcc82","accessControl_ssim":["23ad02a9-6777-42d8-b51a-4bc9c017d373"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Paving the road to reconciliation: a ministry project to ensure successful prisoner reentry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:18:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:25:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f18db9d0-b218-4789-91c8-d7c578ef92f7"],"hasLease_ssim":["8bfd0739-03ea-4158-ae35-053bea485707"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Alvin Padilla"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Janice Ivy Thompson"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Social ehtics","Prisons","Church work with prisoners","Christian ethics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work is a systemic study on the development of a Christian church-based prisoner reentry program. The overall framework of this project is constructed according to Eldin Villafañe's 'social ethics hermeneutical circle paradigm.' This paradigm consists of three steps, raising three basic questions: Clarification -- what are the ministry issues? Conceptualization -- what are the biblical/theological themes pertinent to this ministry? Confrontation -- how should the Christian church respond to the issues? There are two main assumptions underlying this work. First is the understanding that prison is the place where criminals are punished, not the place that directs people away from criminal behavior. Many prisoner reentry issues are produced by an increasingly punitive and decreasingly rehabilitative criminal justice system. Second, the Christian church is an ideal candidate for the task of effecting permanent behavioral change in ex-offenders. The mental model is that the Christian church is a community institution which draws on religious traditions that affirm the values of human life, community, and faith, making it uniquely equipped to deal with the social and emotional challenges faced by recently released prisoners. The primary aim of this project is to use this mental model to show how church-based reentry ministries can be successful in reorienting, transforming, and empowering ex-offenders so that they might resist the temptations to crime present in our cities."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132128468008960,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:58:28.210Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:18:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:56:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a9b55090-d1c0-4826-8ac1-51ec07229846","accessControl_ssim":["00bcc78c-94de-49be-8962-66f361561625"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The lifestyles and preaching styles of the early Methodist circuit riders in Ohio"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:18:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:02:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b49f7a31-47b6-486e-8ca5-91845ce8fe54"],"hasLease_ssim":["3cbba959-53ce-4fc2-9756-0051c57ce60e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"location_tesim":["Ohio"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Harley E Roston"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Methodist preaching","Church history","Methodist Church","History"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["What does history matter? One of the chief values of history is entertainment. It is fascinating to learn about the people of the past. We enjoy listening, seeing and reading about what happened in the past. It is my hope that people who read this thesis will be captivated by the story of the lives of the early circuit riders. History can also be the source of inspiration. As we learn more about those who created the heritage of which we are heirs, we may be inspired to give thanks for their lives, and we may pledge to follow their example. We know that history's real importance is that it helps us understand who we are. It is a clue to our own identity. By reflecting on the past, we can better understand who we are and determine who the future direction of our ministry. This thesis will be a resource in teaching students in confirmation classes and to groups in the church who need to know about their rich United Methodist Heritage. It is concerned with the history and theories of laughter in terms of how they connect with current pastoral attitudes toward it. Questions of appropriateness are central to this exploration. A primary premise of the work is that laughter is a significant component of pastoral ministry, but its study seems marginalized by the church. This incongruence is further aggravated by the fact that much of the rest of the world accurately sees laughter as a significant social force. Except for the church, all other entities in society interested in shaping society seem to know the power and place of laughter. To address this inconsistency, this study reviewed all available literature and the Scriptures in order to discover the theories and views of laughter leading theologians and philosophers have had and then apply the best of the categories emerging from this to a current understanding of laughter. Both surveys and interviews uncovered what the current understanding of laughter is for a sample of pastors within the geographical framework of New York's Hudson Valley. The research findings led to the development of ideas for applying an enlightened view of laughter to pastoral ministry for the purpose of making it more effective."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130629217189888,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:34:38.413Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:18:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:05:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d74b7f8e-d025-487d-bc2b-1faf323268cf","accessControl_ssim":["0183efd0-af23-4ce4-a697-5662de518f28"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Evangelical Women in the pulpit: identification of characteristics that contribute to the effectiveness of Evangelical women pursuing God's call to serve as preacher and pastor to the local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:18:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:17:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d9168bab-c373-493a-9436-31a1672b1dea"],"hasLease_ssim":["afe48fa2-e1bf-4cb3-92c2-6ae145df517e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ramona A Spilman"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Women clergy","Self-evaluation"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Two millennia after the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and the beginnings of his church, the participation of women who proclaim his trust in public worship is still under debate. Exegetical, sociological and resultant theological debates have raged and continue to rage within both scholarly circles as well as in the local church. Sadly, those who hold a high view of Scripture find this issue more divisive, bitter, and emotional than any other. Denominational and church splits have occurred as a result of the ongoing debate over women ministering in local churches. Apologetics from any number of viewpoints abound. Yet, there is a dearth of information that provides guidance to women considering a vocational call to the 'ministry of the Word'. Among the overwhelming number of things that have been written regarding women in the pulpit, little has been written about the women themselves. This is especially true of women who have been educated in evangelical institutions and continue to their commitment to an evangelical view of Scripture. This thesis explores the characteristics that contribute to the effectiveness of evangelical women pursuing God's call to serve as preacher and pastor to the local church. It identifies the barriers with which women must be prepared to deal in the pursuit of that calling and suggests skills that should be honed as well as the character traits, aptitudes and giftedness necessary for a woman to be effective. This thesis suggests areas where a woman, pursuing the call to preach the Word of God, may evaluate her own strengths and weaknesses in light of those who have preceded her, in order to most effectively use her time in preparation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132585206743040,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:05:43.790Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:15:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:43:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6cae21e4-89a7-46ca-9aa6-a44d260cc0f9","accessControl_ssim":["bf4f0e99-b361-4b13-bd73-207c804c3573"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An expository experiment on the virtue of courtship rather than traditional American dating"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:15:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:18:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["150a8d87-d754-47b1-aa79-bc952b4e0278"],"hasLease_ssim":["bc27135e-408a-49f7-8607-964b50a5da2b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John W Hardison"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Connwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with youth","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation was birthed out of a need to find a solution to the breakup dilemma in the dating process which contributes to the ever rising rate in separation and divorced marriages. This project is designed, through an expository sermon, to reintroduce the listener to a premarital process (courtship) that in the past produced more solid and committed marriages in the history of America, but unfortunately has been long forgotten. In this study a pre-sermon survey was taken to cull the respondents' preconceived ideas about the subject of courtship followed by the preaching of a message on the subject of virtue of courtship rather than traditional American dating. Following the preaching of the sermon, a post-sermon survey was taken to see if the respondents' opinions had changed based on the information they received from the sermon. Did this sermon persuade the respondents to change their opinion and consider the premarital process of courtship as a more virtuous process than traditional dating? That is the answer this project seeks to find out. Following the preaching of the sermon, the respondents' answers showed a positive increase of influence in support of courtship over American dating."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131185213079552,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:43:28.651Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:08:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:49:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8961bb1a-03ab-4e1d-bd17-9cb924fd0999","accessControl_ssim":["49fdd7bd-d802-4889-9605-56b270f4721a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Teaching the essentials of biblical preaching"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:08:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:10:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2730050e-a502-44a7-a163-66ec5efb1861"],"hasLease_ssim":["ad2fb113-1471-425e-bf1f-3a16f2b22eeb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John K Carroll"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Expository preaching","Bible--Homiletic use","Lay preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis is a condensed course in biblical preaching. The course presented here has been taught by the author in the Lay Pastors Training Seminar under the auspices of the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches in Canada."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131586315419648,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:49:51.173Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:06:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:22:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0b9a161c-9725-4aca-9d3c-050c7d3c29bd","accessControl_ssim":["84f18c65-e727-4133-9667-7804a3aad0a1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Puritan encounter with the nineteenth century: the mind and ministry of Jonathan Fisher"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:05:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:26:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["07e4e3ce-7516-4d5c-87e6-14d10b6c9518"],"hasLease_ssim":["da80243e-99a7-434f-81f4-ee50cd00d800"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Garth M Rosell"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Richard S Carter"],"keyword_tesim":["Preaching, Puritan"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Fisher, Jonathan, Rev","Preaching","Congregational Church (Bluehill, Me)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This biographical thesis is derived predominantly from primary source materials proposes and successfully defends the Rev. The Minor Prophets communicated during times of natural and national crises. Much misunderstanding still exists concerning the biblical role of a prophet and the nature of prophetic speech. The work is concerned with the questions raised by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City and the evangelical response both in print and the pulpit. A primary premise of the work is that there was/is a misunderstanding or denial of the possible chastising role of God upon the USA in 9/11. Prior to 9/11 many evangelical pastors and spokespersons decried the sins of America and warned of possible and even deserved judgment. When a national crisis such as 9/11 occurred, however, which seems to parallel the circumstances that God used to gain the attention of an errant nation in the Bible, many of these same pastors were either silent concerning judgment or vigorously promoted patriotism and 'just-war' retaliation against perceived enemies. The goal of this thesis is to encourage pastors to consider God's possible chastisement of the nation, and to help pastors avoid common 'pitfalls' when preaching prophetically."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130427783643136,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:31:26.311Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:05:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:36:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4a040ab4-bded-4352-95e2-09beafeff1cc","accessControl_ssim":["f668fb35-0efd-42d4-8532-c6e9216fb3cf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching for spiritual growth: using Jesus' metaphors to shape sermon applications"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:05:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:17:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7732e3e3-6d4f-45d1-90a2-159282fdfda7"],"hasLease_ssim":["a7252136-03cb-4509-941c-2d0bbf0691ab"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Richard A Griffin"],"keyword_tesim":["Jesus Christ--Teachings"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Faith development","Sermons"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Whenever our listeners think about their interactions with God, they will think using the tools we give them. What we truly think shapes our decisions and our behavior. Over the last two decades, cognitive scientists have developed a strong body of research to argue that whenever we think about abstract concepts, such as Spiritual growth, we use metaphors to think with. And while metaphors enable us to think about abstractions; they also shape our thinking about those abstractions. Evangelical preachers, by and large, give their listeners performance-based metaphors for thinking about their interactions with God. Sermon applications typically emphasize 'steps to attain X'--where 'X' is the goal for that particular sermon. This activates a ladder or staircase metaphor in their listeners' thinking--a metaphor that emphasizes effort. By understanding how metaphors work, how metaphors shape our thinking, and Jesus' metaphors, Evangelical preachers can develop sermon applications that will assist, rather than hinder, their listener's Spiritual growth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130732781895680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:36:17.180Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":766,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":5,"label":"Dissertation"},{"value":"Thesis","hits":2,"label":"Thesis"},{"value":"D.Min.
