It is concerned with questions about the current nature of mentoring within the Free Will Baptist denomination especially , its educational institutions. The primary premise of the work is that there is no formal structure for the mentoring of a new generation of ministers available to ministry students at Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College. The benefits to the student, mentor, church, and institution warrant development of such a formal structure to provide mentoring of ministry students. The thesis begins with an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of Hillsdale College's current ministry training program. The concept of mentoring is defined as one in which the more skilled or more experienced person, serving as a role model, teachers, sponsors, encourages, counsels, and befriends, a less skilled or less experienced person for the purpose of promoting the latter's professional and or personal development. This process must be done within the context of an ongoing caring relationship. The thesis concludes with a chapter in which a mentoring program for Hillsdale is designed and implemented."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130323158827008,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:29:46.533Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:39:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"59ddb0c9-b2b9-40be-8265-d66845019c38","accessControl_ssim":["997c6e0c-95f1-488c-bc71-0396383243fd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching in a postmodern context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:46:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ffd45077-3bda-4779-acbf-51997b7e14f0"],"hasLease_ssim":["65927f0e-ad34-4647-86a8-cca60e96716d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Hugo F Venegas R"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Postmodernism","Preaching--Study and teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project focuses on what it takes to preach transformationally in today's postmodern context. Chapter one begins by examining the challenges that postmodern culture poses to preaching. Chapter two defines postmodernism in three distinct but separate ways. Chapter three uncovers the mood of postmodern culture and how postmodernism is, in many ways, an existential reaction to the downsides of modernity. Chapter four focuses on discovering how America hears the gospel. understanding this is essential because it provides preachers with ample feedback on how listeners perceive the gospel. Chapter five uses the metaphor of Greek mythology's Trojan Horse to anchor the concept that every culture possesses elements which function as barriers to the gospel. Chapter six identifies elements within the culture which are user-friendly to the gospel. Chapter seven looks at oratorical and cultural factors which make messages stick to listener consciousness. Chapters eight and nine address the personal traits preachers must have to make a difference in a postmodern setting. Since postmodernity signals the age of the communicator as opposed to the age of the preacher, the research objective was to uncover key elements required of communicators who want to effectively reach postmodern listeners."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130954193960960,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:48.334Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:56:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ac9c30e8-ce64-48ed-8648-5c9586572641","accessControl_ssim":["7db34bf2-77e7-4865-a140-12cd3640b555"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Puritan way: models of piety for reform and renewal in the Japanese Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:07:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["28cf88a9-a64e-4422-a833-2ebb0941d455"],"hasLease_ssim":["9c424a63-04e3-4c48-b5e3-d240bbcebe20"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Garth M Rosell"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"location_tesim":["Japan"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David J Walker"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Protestant churches","Church renewal--Protestant churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The Protestant church in Japan has struggled to grow. This thesis explores the historical hope of revival and key aspects of Puritan spirituality that can be foundational building blocks for a revived and reformed Japanese church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132024801591296,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:56:49.346Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:20:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"04ae414c-6f71-4012-9e8b-497a946ed31b","accessControl_ssim":["dfe00aae-7e16-47a6-9c98-4780204f44ee"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The church as an agent of spiritual formation: the integrated roles of teaching, relating, and experiencing in the overall program of the local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:15:10Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["75b0ebfd-63c3-4747-8da1-0ee0324f72a3"],"hasLease_ssim":["ae3988f9-dd4b-41a3-bf98-20f936403a1b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gary Parrett"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John E Butterfield"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Faith development"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work concerns the role and effectiveness of the local church in the Christian formation of believers. In doing so, the influence of culture, both past and present, is considered. The church, due in part to the influence of modernism, has approached discipleship in a 'consumer driven' fashion. Churches tend to function as religious cafeterias, focusing on the perceived needs and wants of religious consumers. Generally, discipleship in the local church has become haphazard and unintentional in regards to process and outcome. The author offers an approach that is integrated, simple, and biblical. The approach advocates the integration of the three components of intentional teaching, relating, and experiencing in every program of the local church, so as to efficiently promote Christian formation in the lives of believers in a balanced, holistic way. Scripture and the practices of the ancient church support an integrated, holistic approach to Christian formation. The three components of intentional teaching, relating, and are included as central elements of the spiritual maturation process in the Old and New Testaments, as well as in the early church. These components form the core of the integrated strategy. The results of the study enable churches to address two primary issues regarding Christian formation First, from the church's point of view, every program or meeting offered by the church becomes an agent of spiritual growth. Intentional teaching, authentic relationships, and meaningful experiences are employed in different ways in different settings, but the people are purposefully exposed to Christian discipleship at every level of church programming. Second, from the believer's perspective, every person involved in churches using this strategy are able to grow spiritually in an environment that is biblical, balanced, and efficient. Biblical spiritual growth provides a firm foundation for life. A strategy that is balanced enables believers to see the inherent authenticity that Christianity brings to all of life. An efficient strategy enables believers to grow spiritually while being good stewards of their time. The church has a responsibility to enable believers to engage in biblical, balanced spiritual growth, but the church must do so without becoming the center of attention. The believer's focus must remain on God and neighbor so as to worship whole-heartedly and minister faithfully."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129760977387520,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:20:50.394Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:23:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"128570a4-a0e9-407f-a683-c2fa554cb010","accessControl_ssim":["d6c85054-129c-479c-bb65-4624617cd6a8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A study of a framework for marital and family therapy in a pastoral context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:39:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4b925035-455c-4b6a-9ed1-b41758b53928"],"hasLease_ssim":["c9cb7c35-9775-4a5e-a609-b1bc3604d06a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Douglas S Walker"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Marriage counseling","Family counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study is to explore various aspects of marriage and family therapy in a pastoral setting. It looks at the history of Christian witness to Muslims and suggests that relational and contextually sensitive approaches be employed in the presentation of biblical truths. An evangelistic Bible study written to reach literate Afghan Muslims, called The Unfolding Story, serves as the core of the project. It employs a whole Bible approach providing lessons from creation to Pentecost. Lessons progress chronologically through salvation themes, in particular sacrifice motifs from the Old Testament, culminating in the substitutionary death of Christ on the Cross. The problem of sin is especially highlighted as are the attempts to overcome sin by one's own efforts. Throughout the study, storytelling and guided discussion in a one-on-one encounter with an Afghan seeker has been employed. This thesis follows the history of the study's inception and development in preparation for translation into the native tongues of Afghanistan and likeminded Muslim populations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132325670551552,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:01:36.277Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":766,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":5,"label":"Dissertation"},{"value":"Thesis","hits":2,"label":"Thesis"},{"value":"D.Min.
