The writer decided to conduct a study that would center on the sharing of testimonies or spiritual journeys by a select sample of prisoners. For twelve weeks, 20 African-American men--10 Christians and 10 Muslims--poured their hearts out and shared their experiences of spiritual transformation, not only as individuals but also as persons of faith. The African American experience revealed that Islam has better served incarcerated persons than the Black church. The reasons are: 1. Islam has been more visibly available both inside and outside the prison. 2. Islam provides protection and community life. 3. Islam serves a a counter culture to the regimentation of institutionalization and provides a survival mode for the incarcerated not readily recognized within the Christianity of the Black church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Hartford Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8e52e4c8-38b6-4846-872d-a744b4f5725d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721830487949312,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:28:06.412Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:56:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:29:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e7c25f79-ac30-4f47-9b94-909a61717c87","accessControl_ssim":["e858f21a-b31c-4858-a64a-18d153df6caf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A whole church approach to spiritual growth through covenant and commitment at the Congregational Church of New Fairfield"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:56:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:45:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0df1fefe-3fe9-498c-97ff-743739558995"],"hasLease_ssim":["b2b7ae83-09a3-4bd7-bfc9-e8802843813d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Cynthia A Woolever"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Patricia A Nicholas"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregational churches--United States","Spiritual formation"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project sought to promote spiritual growth within the entire congregation by offering a wide variety of spiritual practices, activities, and events. When I first arrived, the church was closed and set to be demolished. By inspiring the remaining congregation, and empowering them using the principles espoused by the Second Vatican Council of reversing the hierarchy of the clergy and by following Jackson W. Carroll's model of how to exercise authority, they performed outreach in the surrounding community, extending an invitation to non-affiliated Catholics to attend Saint Peter's, and by listening to the spiritual needs of the people. The result was the expansion of the church to the point that it was possible to reopen the church building. By empowering the people of Saint Peter's, the church building and parish were saved, and ultimately a spiritual life center was created."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Hartford Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8e52e4c8-38b6-4846-872d-a744b4f5725d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721913415630848,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:29:25.498Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:54:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:02:22Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c25b54f1-2a50-4a1e-bc83-5d82bfdbffc3","accessControl_ssim":["311167a7-08e9-4300-bf61-83d57bc76766"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Inter-religious dialogue: a tool for transformation in the local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:54:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:43:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fce0dcea-603e-4836-b916-85acb5c5b078"],"hasLease_ssim":["64f319e1-d89d-4d5f-b3a5-c16eed0e72ba"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Cynthia Woolever"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mark Lang Heilshorn"],"publisher_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christianity and other religions","Christian education--Teaching methods"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project examines the theological tenets and offers methods for Abrahamic inter-religious dialogue. The goals of this project are to (a) strengthen the purpose of the local church, the First Congregational Church of Woodbury, and (b) inspire individual and community leadership. Three faith summits and a 'faith \u0026 justice' lecture series were devised. The first summit was held in the fall of 2005, the second faith summit in the spring of 2006, and the third in the fall of 2006. The 'faith \u0026 justice' lecture was a by-product of evaluations and learning from the three faith summits. Two committees were formed. The intra-religious committee and the inter-religious task force help steer the dialogue. Ongoing lectures and events are now combined efforts of both committees. The lectures are inspiring inter-religious dialogue both within the church and the community at large."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Hartford Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8e52e4c8-38b6-4846-872d-a744b4f5725d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720212166082560,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:02:23.060Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:54:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:58:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"516f0dea-c22f-4058-b787-bdef7b40ebe0","accessControl_ssim":["65d951aa-b280-4404-8e01-5193061cce58"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Choice, process, leadership and grace: the four winds of healing for traumatized congregations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:54:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:31:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e6f941b3-b17b-4d63-9b71-3c56f46fa4fa"],"hasLease_ssim":["614a6360-b765-4121-8fea-633dc2adc8d0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Efrain Agosto"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Beverly Prestwood-Taylor"],"publisher_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Psychic trauma","Congregations","Clergy--Malpractice"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["'Traumatized churches,' sometimes labeled 'clergy killer' congregations, are churches marked by clergy sexual misconduct.
