These cases demonstrate that such persons, regardless of impairment, can grow through experience of God's love in trustful interpersonal relationships.  The cases also show that, in spite of recent improvement, some persons continue to be neglected and abused in institutions. Historical research on infant communion is applied to the practice of communing persons who are profoundly mentally retarded.  From the applied research a sound theological rationale for administering communion to persons who are profoundly mentally retarded is developed. The research method used was to interview and survey several members of various local churches now participating in this ministry.  In addition, a section on theology and 'rational assent' were included in the report.
