The theoretical background focused on the study of the nature of belief and disbelief.  Interviews of 20 adults were conducted and analyzed.  The results indicate that a variety of factors contribute to the rejection of formerly-held beliefs; however, most often factors indicated poor judgment on the part of local church leadership. The study develops a theology and theory on marriage, traces the historical and literary formulation of premarital counseling as a practice, reports the results of a questionnaire survey of premarital counseling practices among clergy in the two Adventist conferences, and develops an alternative premarital counseling program which enables clergy to save time and enhance their premarriage counseling experiences.  The study of 100 clergy in two Adventist conferences investigated their programs, backgrounds, churches and materials characteristic of premarital counseling. Data from questionnaires returned by the clergy indicated: 1) 94.0 percent believe in premarital counseling; 2) only 18.0 percent felt comfortable doing premarital counseling; 3) the majority felt uncertain about the actual effectiveness of premarital counseling; 4) 84.0 percent require premarital counseling; but 5) 87.0 percent said they did not have a specific structured counseling program. Where the people as a whole and the pastor have shared significant mutual trust, such 'corporate' trust begins to weaken while the personal ties, or 'one to one' trust between the pastor and individual parishioners grows deeper.  What do these paradoxical-seeming changes mean?  nearly eighty such pastorates were studied to learn how the pastor can maintain strong corporate trust as well as the individual trust that results in good pastoral care. Christian maturation is defined as growth toward having a Spirit-filled character as described in the New Testament.  A six month course was taught in six churches and involved thirty-four people.  Pre- and post-course psychological testing instruments were used as well as questionnaires at the end of the course.  The comparison of the testing instruments' data shows a significant growth toward Christian maturity as defined by the author. The format is a series of four small group dialogues held in a local United Methodist church.  Changes of attitudes are measured by an instrument administered at the beginning and at the end of the dialogue process. The pastor joins biblical and theoretical reflection with the joint creative activity.  Seven biblical passages receive exposition. A theoretical section gives two psychological approaches, two theological approaches, one historical and one sociological.  Inter-relation of religion, art and ethics is explored. Give-and-take process of adjustments in text and format are detailed.  Learnings for the pastor both from theory and process are cited. The research method used was to interview and survey several members of various local churches now participating in this ministry.  In addition, a section on theology and 'rational assent' were included in the report.
