In Jungian psychology 'shadow' describes the usually unacknowledged, nondominant aspects of personality that energize behavior in dangerous and unpredictable ways. Preachers can learn to use this energy to enliven preaching that takes all of the 'voices' seriously. In this framework preaching is in essence an imparting of power of the Holy Spirit and the risen Christ, over against the powers that actively seek to subvert the task of preaching.
