Commonly, preachers are taught to preach, but seldom are hearers equipped for their role.  Employing the language of personality and temperament types as a vehicle for discussion, a strategy is suggested which brings preacher and hearers together in a small group format, enabling each to enhance their skills in hearing the Word of God by listening to one another. It is rooted in temperament.  People listen depending upon whether or not the preacher is proclaiming the Word in a way that has integrity to their way of thinking.  Using the Meyers-Briggs understanding of temperaments, preachers are challenged to take seriously the different ways people have of hearing sermons.  Data from one Lutheran congregation, practical suggestions and a sermon for people of all temperaments are included.
