Young people often feel disenfranchised within the life of the worshipping community, but there are models of preaching that can nurture a strong sense of empowerment. Through surveys, group work, and observations of worshipping youth, the author proposes a model of conversational preaching that helps to bring youth into active participation with the development of the sermon. Youth feel left out of the preaching moment.  Youth will respond to preaching that tries to meet them at their level, lifts up their experience as ways a community experiences the divine, and fosters a sense of companionship on the journey of faith that all disciples make.  To date there has been little written in the field of homiletics about the youth and preaching. The metaphor of preacher as companion incorporates inviting youth to reflect on their own identities, nurturing the youth, and lifting up their experiences as ways to encounter the divine.  The methods used to engage youth in preaching were using language that youth can understand, employing story and narrative, and occasionally moving out of the pulpit.
