People were invited into a circle of conversation comprised of four 'moments': individual and Bible text; a group conversation; people's testimonies lifted up in the preaching moment; and talk-back conversation after the sermon. The thesis reviews studies on mainline decline and postmodernism.  It utilizes a radical understanding of the Pauline ecclesia as a community in which all relationships had to be renegotiated: 'neither slave nor free, Jew nor Greek, male nor female.'  The thesis draws on the author's experience in church development as a presbytery associate executive. The challenge facing the church is to incorporate new members into its life and mission through a process of blending past faith histories and experiences with present needs, goals, and expectations in such a way that a commitment evolves giving direction to the future.  By examining the biblical witness, blending families, and organizational development, a blending process which shapes identity emerges.
