The context of this project is a Presbyterian congregation in Chicago which includes African immigrants, African Americans, Euro-Americans, persons with chronic mental illness and those whose quirkiness has avoided medical detection. The author explores how people who are displaced from their cultures and/or families of origin experience the church as 'home'. However, the dynamics of race and ethnicity are dominant presenting factors and often obstacles in multi-cultural arenas. Leaders therefore need to utilize different tools in order to overcome attitudinal and behavioral dynamics that impede a multi-cultural group's work.
