The situation of the diocese of Bismark is similar to most rural dioceses in the United States. Integrating gender studies, rural sociology, rural catechetical ministry and contemporary leadership theory, this thesis-project maintains that leadership development uniquely focused for women in rural catechetical ministry will increase their sense of self as leader and leadership practices. The study gives voice to rural women involved in catechetical ministry as they expressed themselves in various sessions. In order to test this thesis, Roman Catholic neophytes and 243 coordinators were surveyed.  Theological reflection on the responses to the survey and subsequent interviews held with people who are implementing the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults point up the responsibility that parish leaders have to engender the communities of empowerment similar to the small communities of the early church. Part one analyzes the influence of the rite's theological anthropology and asceticism in ministering to the sick. Part two describes the five-session, in-service learning workshop.
