This project examined two coaching tools, Gallup StrengthsFinder and World Harvest Mission Gospel-Centered Life, to determine if using them in combination improved team effectiveness to a greater degree than using either tool alone.  Seventeen participants on two core leadership teams from church plants in urban Philadelphia were trained with both tools.  The qualitative research was conducted by self-evaluation surveys that gathered  information before and after each phase of training. The team approach within the caring community seems to fit this need. The 'team' will be an interdisciplinary team whose goal is to provide a more effective pastoral care. As an ordained clergy in the United Methodist Church, one of my biggest frustrations has always been that the 'job' is bigger than one individual can successfully accomplish. The old adage 'two heads are better than one' rings true to me for Christian ministry. Through the years, many have felt that the laity understands pastoral care as the sole duty of the paid clergy. The scriptures clearly show that Jesus did not understand ministry as an individual endeavor, but as a team approach as he sent his disciples out to minister in pairs. Also, Jesus said, 'When two or more are gathered in my name, I am in the midst of them.' This is an expression of community gathering in Christ's name and ministering not alone, but with Christ in their midst. The primary focus of the class leaders is collecting money and attending to the physical well-being of their members in a limited capacity.  According to the general rules written by Wesley, attention should also be given to the 'means of grace,' or the practice of spiritual disciplines.  Doing so would significantly shape the lives of the members in their spiritual formation.  The researcher used pre and post surveys, lectures and small group process to gether, disseminate and integrate information respectively.  Readings in the areas of Wesley's class leader system and the spiritual disciplines were used to gain knowledge. The research project concluded that when persons were given tools and were intentional about learning and practicing the 'means of grace,' their spiritual journey was enhanced. Research indicates that small faith groups have an impact on the faith life of adults. The spirituality in small faith groups is explored in connection with Franciscan values.
