The study begins by demonstrating the debate over the use and interpretation of the BCO within the PCA. It introduces the debate by putting the BCO into the context of the Constitution of the PCA, examining its relation to the Westminster Standards, and how subscription to the Standards affects operating under the BCO. Having put the BCO into the larger context of the Constitution of the PCA, it explores the current debate over polity before examining the resources available to illuminate the BCO. The study moves then to the basic biblical principles of Presbyterian church government. It investigates the headship of Christ as the foundational principle of Church government before working out the implications of his headship in jure divino government and the regulative principle. An examination of Acts 15 shows Christ’s headship in action in the life of the Church, leading to an exploration of the fundamental Scriptural principles that underlie and shape Presbyterian polity. The study then surveys the historical development of the BCO from its beginnings in the Colonial era to the current time to see the significant influences that shaped it. This historical context gives the framework to understand both the larger shape of the Church laid out by the BCO and some of the individual provisions. The study culminates in a chapter-by-chapter commentary on the BCO that marries the broad context identified in the rest of the study to the narrow context of the history and basis of each specific provision to provide an easy-to-use reference for the elders of the Church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128872026112000,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:06:42.624Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:33:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:18:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c795cda8-f8c8-48dc-add9-c161d37fbc1f","accessControl_ssim":["82e384c6-4d8f-43a0-9d6e-e07026ac5237"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing a Governance Transition Plan at Fisher's Peak Community Church (SBC), Trinidad, CO"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:33:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:51:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f7161a58-89f4-4a96-8b45-9c5aa0953e28"],"hasLease_ssim":["bd8ec58a-0b5d-481b-bc63-f2ddae05e4bc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gateway Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Greg Cole D.Ed.Min."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"location_tesim":["North America"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. This church is much like many of its kind; it has a long proud history of effective ministry in the community in which it resides. For over 150 years DFUMC has been a faithful body of believers bent on making disciples of Jesus Christ from its location in the heart of Dublin. As time has progressed, the facilities of the church have begun to decline and the existing structure became much in need of renovation, remodel and new construction. The leadership of DFUMC decided that a Building Project was needed to directly address these acknowledged needs in order for the church to continue to be a place of meaningful worship, study and fellowship. The purpose of this Project Thesis came as a result of this decision and of the desire to ascertain what the specific role the Senior Pastor of the church would be in this building project. In pursuit of this end, extensive research on pastoral identity, sacred architecture, institutional change theory and Christian leadership was conducted. Following this research, Qualitative Research methodology was employed through the utilization of subject interviews. The interviews were focused on similarly situated Senior Pastors of large historic UMC congregations that have or were currently undergoing a similar large Building Project. Four such Senior Pastors were chosen according to these criteria and were interviewed using identical targeted interrogatories. The data gleaned from these interviews was then analyzed by coding the resulting information. Specific categories and codes that were identified as pertinent to the study were identified and the data was examined accordingly. The findings were that there is indeed a specific role for the Senior Pastor of a large historic UMC in a Building Project of this type."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://hdl.handle.net/10898/10085"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720813750910976,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:11:56.776Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:05:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:15:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c3544453-3da4-4a42-8c50-9c936c4b2c54","accessControl_ssim":["406e478c-8da7-45fa-a5a9-411bf00ae6ef"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Learning to Dialogue and Discern: Conversations that Matter in the Local Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:05:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:44:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7387a6d3-4b93-4b38-a103-7e90b230b9af"],"hasLease_ssim":["c77a1428-70d5-4430-92e3-a0e25bb66992"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Mercer University, McAfee School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Jeffrey Willetts Ph.D.","David Gushee Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2019"],"location_tesim":["Georgia","United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Learning how to navigate the dual enterprises of exploring politicized moral issues in a church community setting and fundamentally changing how a group dialogues requires deep examination of Christian morality, the ethical methodologies to assess it and make moral recommendations in group settings, and the group dynamics and dialogue / discernment models. With the deep social and political divide in the United States today, politically diverse churches like River Road Church, Baptist in Richmond, Virginia have often become silent on issues of moral importance that have become politicized, or have even split along secular political party lines, instead of seeking to find a Christian response to contemporary political and social issues through productive dialogue. This project sought to create a covenantal ethical discerning dialogue that produces a way of having a productive dialogue within church leadership that is theologically rich, intellectually serious, genuinely illuminating about moral issues, and that leaves the community intact. Ultimately, the project results seemed to indicate that such a model for discerning dialogue was necessary and helpful for church leaders, while also providing some insight to needed changes to the dialogue process."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://hdl.handle.net/10898/12329"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129441259225088,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:15:45.488Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:04:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:10:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"47cc2c57-2e04-40dc-a984-f53d8be95646","accessControl_ssim":["39962b7a-7ab2-449d-9933-b4954796cc30"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Sacred Call Of A Deacon: The Role Of The Nominations And Lay Leadership Committee In The Corporate Discernment Of Deacons At First Baptist Church, Greenwood, South Carolina"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:04:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:14:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3b135cea-7276-43bc-8e91-3389463e9f77"],"hasLease_ssim":["dbbc9bc4-074c-4613-9379-8c5625f8012d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Mercer University, McAfee School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Karen Massey Ph.D.","Daniel Vestal D.D."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"location_tesim":["Georgia","United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Under the old model, committee members randomly select potential deacon nominees and immediately contact them about having their names placed into nomination. The following project thesis introduces the First Baptist Nominations and Lay Leadership Committee to a corporate discernment process that allows space for the movement of the Holy Spirit in the scared call of a deacon. The research methodology used in the project thesis involved the researcher being engaged as a participant observer. The researcher also used a combination of participation, observation, and interpretation of data collected from interviews as the primary qualitative research method. The researcher, working with the Nominations and Lay Leadership Committee, compared the answers to pre- and post-research questions after introducing the committee to the First Baptist Corporate Discernment Process. Through the introduction of the First Baptist Corporate Discernment Process, members of the Nominations and Lay Leadership Committee discovered a new way of xii selecting and nominating individuals to serve in the sacred call of a deacon. Members of the committee stated that the introduction of the corporate discernment process gave the committee the tools necessary to find spiritual consensus during the deacon selection and nomination process. The corporate discernment process also provided the space needed for the movement of the Holy Spirit as the committee sought spiritual consensus during the deacon selection and nomination process. Opportunities for additional study include the use of the corporate discernment process with other committees and boards of First Baptist. Further study also includes introducing the process to the diaconate. After a season of conflict, declining membership, and the unexpected loss of key leadership, a season of vision has allowed the congregation to ask how it can adapt to live into a thriving future. Utilizing the principles of Adaptive Leadership Theory developed by Ronald Heifetz, this thesis tests the potential of an adaptive change process to facilitate the first steps of congregational vision implementation.Sixteen Augusta Road Baptist Church leaders were oriented to the principles of Adaptive Leadership Theory and asked to put them into practice. Through team meetings, these participants diagnosed technical and adaptive challenges facing the church, chose an adaptive challenge to address, and designed interventions to develop adaptive capacity within the congregation to help it live into its vision. Participants were also presented with spiritual reflections to facilitate the recognition of the Holy Spirit’s work in leading disruption and adaptation. After introducing the research context and problem, this thesis traces the biblical, theological, and historical tradition of the Holy Spirit’s role in driving the church to adapt as it bears witness to Christ in changing and challenging contexts. It then explores the impact of an adaptive change process on project participants. It follows project participants as they design interventions for achieving congregational vision, recognize the work of the Holy Spirit in congregational life, and develop adaptive capacity. Finally, this thesis concludes with possibilities for utilizing this adaptive change process across all ministries at Augusta Road Baptist Church and in other congregations that find themselves in adaptive moments."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716946242961408,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:10:28.433Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:29:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:49:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9173c567-9cfc-4108-8237-fb185777a829","accessControl_ssim":["94ac854f-a0bf-417b-afe7-72b55530b09e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Model for Transitioning Leadership in the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Church of God In Christ"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:29:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:23:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1052f0cf-32be-4317-84fd-6dc7b11317d0"],"hasLease_ssim":["191c5558-6e49-46b0-ab68-7fb239305931"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Missio Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kyuboem Lee D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2019"],"location_tesim":["Pennsylvania"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Nathaniel Alfonso Hall Jr."],"subject_tesim":["Organizational change","Church management","Leadership--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Oftentimes the mission, vision, purpose, and plan of God lives longer than an individual. Every single generation stands on the shoulders of those who went before them. People build on and must not destroy the foundation that is laid before them.
