The goal of this project was to develop a contextualized discipleship strategy for Chinese international students that prepares them for re-entry into their native country. Qualitative research was used to gain a better understanding of Chinese international students coming to the University of Wisconsin. It also served to assess the effectiveness of the discipleship strategy. The long-term success of this discipleship strategy is unverified. Since then, changes in society, religion and the university itself have created a far different cultural setting for university congregations.  Through a survey of American Baptist university churches and case studies of two congregations, mission and identity in the university church are explored.  Churches studied exhibited a strong sense of identity, strong connections with the community, strong connections between faith and learning, 'spiritual balance,' and were reappropriating the church's tradition for the present day. Many of these students become actively involved in the life of the church throughout the period of their study.  However, many others do not.  This project presents a strategy for integrating students into the life of a church.  Mentoring provides an ideal model for involving an entire congregation in ministry to and with students.  Based on a theological framework and using lessons learned from history, demography and ethnography, a three-pronged model of mentoring (visitation/evangelism, mentoring and hospitality) is developed.  The model was tested successfully in Knox Presbyterian Church, Toronto, found next to the University of Toronto.  The study is in three parts.  The first is a theoretical and analytical basis for a programme of mentoring. The second provides a practical manual for establishing a mentoring community in a local church. A control group met for an equal amount of time without the adventure-based component.  The elements of risk, fear, trust, communication, and danger were experienced in a non-shaming, supportive environment and served to reframe the students' childhood trauma of life in an alcoholic family.  Family systems theory and St Paul's 'body' analogy were illustrated in this study. Such traditional approaches to students in Christian schools as classroom Bible teaching and chapel services are not functioning effectively in modern Japan. From his own experience, the author proposes a new approach of volunteer work programs formed by small groups.  When they are thrown into an entirely new life situation students ask existential questions.  The way is then open for teachers to explain meanings of the Christian message. The theories of Erikson, Fowler and others provide the basis for discussions.  The role of the teacher is crucial in this approach. Students were evaluated by empirical observation, that involved the student, a peer, and adviser, and the discipler, and reproducibility in a second small group.  The students practiced relational skills and the spiritual disciplines of: daily prayer, Bible reading, time stewardship, group accountability and journal keeping.  The discipler served as a mentor and as a model for the disciplines. The project demonstrated the positive results of having a discipler guide students through spiritual
