The project is based in a local church community; it is focused on Scripture and on a sacramental and faith understanding of married life; it provides opportunity to practice communication skills through six meetings with 'homework' between meetings; it uses a marriage counselor to train and guide leader couples as a referral resource; it emphasizes peer couple-to-couple ministry based on lived experience in marriage. The six group sessions treat respect for relationship, confidentiality, and group process; needs of women and men; communication skills; stress and its response in men and womwen; sharing and coordinating values; and intimacy and spirituality. In the first workshop, the target group gathered to experience a process of theological reflection on the mysteries of God, Jesus, church and ministry, with an aim to gain an appreciation for pluralism and diversity.  The second workshop was on the development of communication skills (empathetic listening and assertive self-disclosure as vehicles to becoming collaborative).  The Whitehead method of experience in dialogue with the culture and tradition predominated. This purpose was accomplished by the development of an instrument which was applied in four local church settings.  The instrument contains sixteen statements related to interpersonal communication in the local parish.  Each pastor involved was to complete a self-evaluation and compare that evaluation with those completed by selective members of the congregation. Couples who took the course indicated improvement in their relationship-development skills and a clarification of values and goals for their relationship.  The participants felt that they could deal with conflict more openly and creatively than before and had learned some important communication skills. After reviewing three currently available programs, the Kerber Model is presented which uses a variety of techniques to facilitate couple communication and discovery.  The model was proof tested in a retreat setting and results are assessed.
