This project aims to contextualize that move from a rural and suburban setting to an urban setting for the staff, faculty, and Board of Trustees of the seminary. The author, who was previously employed at Missio Seminary, performed a training workshop, multiple interviews with key faculty and staff, and surveys to support the findings. The author concludes with multiple recommendations for the future of multicultural urban theological education as it applies to Missio Seminary in Philadelphia. This thesis examines and analyzes the problem by combining practical theology, generational studies, and a study of the culture of faith communities. Biblical support is offered by an exegetical examination of three Scripture passages that demonstrate the three intimacy motifs of family, sexuality/marriage, and friendship. Trinitarian and covenant theology reveal the theme of intimacy in the triune God and redemptive history. The doctrine of Union with Christ connects human and Divine intimacy through a Christological lens. An ethnographic study involving a focus group and sixteen interviews is analyzed in order to uncover the intersection of faith and intimate relationships in emerging adults. This thesis investigates the role of faith in the lives of emerging adult relationships and offers a biblical and theological theology of intimacy."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126268186460160,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:25:19.410Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:38:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:01:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5f026546-877b-42d7-b1e0-ca63a7d80636","accessControl_ssim":["a4da34b9-38a4-4273-8be9-4c78f0e7ae50"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Confirmation, Community, and Commitment: Evaluating Church Attendance at the Episcopal Church of St. Mary, Albuquerque, New Mexico"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:38:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:55:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1759bc4e-d274-418b-906e-914b370ea3f3"],"hasLease_ssim":["f1139c7d-0f0f-401c-9579-3d59fbb3ec2e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry (Ambridge, PA)"],"advisor_tesim":["Leslie F. The foundation for the answer is found in the Biblical teaching that holds the purity of God's church in tension with the growth of God's church. The Bible consistently exhorts leaders to be attentive to both purity and growth, not emphasizing one to the neglect of the other. Only a comprehensive understanding of Biblical teaching can produce a theology of assimilation that guards the church from both extremes. A survey of church history demonstrates the difficulty of maintaining this balance, as the church at times has been too exclusive and at other times too inclusive. An examination of the confessions and creeds of all major denominations reveals a consistent recognition of three criterion that must be met in order for one to be admitted into the full privileges and responsibilities of church life, mainly through the time-honored traditions of church membership and church discipline. These high standards are largely neglected in the North American church today, resulting in a spiritually weak, theologically illiterate, and largely unregenerate church. This dissertation examines the pastoral ministry of Jonathan Edwards as a case study for developing a theology of assimilation. Special attention is paid to the process, rationale, circumstances, and missteps leading up to his dismissal from the Northhampton Church. Practical principles are drawn from this significant event and applied to First Bible Church of Decatur, Alabama."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128453967249408,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:00:03.933Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:55:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:22:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cf1f3969-5c08-415c-97e7-c8f71d3b0aad","accessControl_ssim":["f92097a0-073b-43aa-abff-b6d043052a11"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Introducing the adult catechumenate in a Lutheran congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:55:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:04:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4f7a1b8d-65d2-413b-b00d-30611b962aba"],"hasLease_ssim":["82361120-54ce-4160-a2c1-03097f478b3f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Saint Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael G Woost"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joseph F Rinderknecht"],"publisher_tesim":["Saint Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Evangelical Lutheran Church in America--Catechisms","Lutheran Church","Spiritual life--Christianity","Communities--Religious aspects","Balthasar, Hans Urs von, 1905-1988"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Project introduces Adult Catechumenate to suburban congregation in Cleveland, Ohio. A methodology is explored that supports proclamation of a consistent biblically grounded theological vision that engages a faith community's own experience. When the preacher imaginatively and consistently engages the questions, responses and visions of the community which lies behind the primary lectionary Gospel for a year, preaching can inform, evoke, critique and shape the understandings of Christian identity and community that a congregation manifests in its common life and clergy convey through their pastoral leadership."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129372571205632,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:14:39.982Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:09:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:37:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"eebe1856-0818-418a-a9a8-541b749fa760","accessControl_ssim":["32a2371d-bcb1-4d04-8408-4d26acae94d6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["This is the 'church' in Elliot Park: a case study in ecclesiology"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:09:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:57:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2814e944-849c-4593-9666-317022e05365"],"hasLease_ssim":["081147f4-8a4d-4a92-8250-9b20f85aee7d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Loren E Halvorson"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert A Solberg"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church--History of doctrines","Intimacy (Psychology)","Communities--Religious aspects","Christian life","Church group work","Church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The study in ecclesiology shows that persons who are open to the work of God's spirit among them are constantly involved--most often unknowingly--in a pilgrimage of 'ecclesial evolution' as the 'church,' through stages of 'pre-church,' 'emerging church,' and church, where the latter stage represents a more traditional theological description of a gathering of God's people. It states a clear theological definition for each of the stages and then uses personal interviews and the author's own experience in urban ministry as a participant observer to build case studies of each stage of the 'church' as these stages exist theologically and empirically among the residents of an inner city metropolitan community like Elliot Park.
