The author hypothesized that this might be accomplished by substituting three rites of spiritual passage for the customary infant baptism and confirmation.  Drawing on the liturgies of the Roman Catholic, Lutheran, and United Church of Canada and the work of developmental psychologists he designed three rites of passage and tested them in his congregation over a period of two years. The student's own community composes the new environment.  The method considers these assumptions: 1. methodology needs to be consistent with its message; 2. remembrance is enlivened by experience; 3. recall is supported by sites and places; 4. meaningful teaching advances an ethic; 5. our ethic is visible in God's future kingdom; and 6. walking can support Christian learning.  Five lessons and post-tests demonstrate the method.  Evaluation included student responses a week after and parental response eighteen months later. The Faith Development Model of James Fowler is used as a check of this program. An experientially oriented four-session course was developed for 42 ninth-grade confirmands and their parents.  Five instructors were trained as small group leaders.  A pre-test and post-test was administered to the confirmands and parents, and a follow-up interview was conducted by the two pastors. Conclusions are: 1) Careful attention to educational theory and practice pays dividends; 2) Work with the group leaders was necessary to the success of the program; 3) The evaluative tools provided a focus for the entire study by keeping the work on target; 4) The intergenerational scope of the project was vital to the confirmands' and parents' learning and to the enrichment of their understanding of ministry; 5) A new understanding of 'the priesthood of all believers' enhanced appreciation of their own Christian
