Christian families are losing children to the world at a startling pace. The question of who is responsible for the discipleship of children does not receive enough attention. In practice, churches have looked to serve families by performing this function. This research addresses parents’ roles and responsibilities. Among Christians, there can be an inconsistency between doctrine and practice. Children are abandoning Christianity later in life, and many parents are struggling to fulfill their call to nurture their children in the faith. A multitude of measures are being undertaken by faithful congregations to avert the crisis in families. Genesis 1, Deuteronomy 6, Psalm 78, Ephesians 6, and the Pastoral Epistles lay the expectation that parents will function as the primary disciple makers for children. With the concept of sphere sovereignty and more, Abraham Kuyper offers unique insights into this conversation. After examining the current literature and models for family ministry in churches, the field research explores the ministry models of three particular churches on this issue. Each ministry model brings unique biblical approaches in their endeavor to ensure the faith “once for all delivered to saints” is passed to succeeding generations. Each model also faces challenges unique to the approach they have adopted. This research proposes a new “Every Square Inch” discipleship model. The model enables the family and the church to carry out their respective roles while avoiding abrogating the responsibilities given to other parties. This analysis and model are intended to equip Basswood Church in Knoxville, TN in their efforts to see faithful disciples formed in the next generation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128725080768512,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:04:22.487Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:30:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:49:18Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9199ae88-d04b-4d44-aa99-d90d833a5a8b","accessControl_ssim":["6415d372-4831-4939-9b79-f13b02230a39"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Healthy Parenting in the Family System"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:29:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:23:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["82344698-f306-4c94-b4b0-0b46de9fae41"],"hasLease_ssim":["9cbb5e04-dfdb-4a5f-8360-a81f1476e781"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Bethel Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Josh Mateer"],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Brian Malvig"],"subject_tesim":["System theory","Families--Religious life","Leadership--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In the New Testament, there are several passages that illustrate the way in which Christians are to interact with each other. In 1 Corinthians 12:12-26, Romans 12:3-5, and Ephesians 4:4-5 the apostle Paul describes the connection Christians have with one another as being like a body. Through Jesus Christ, Christians are all connected in this body, the body of Christ. Between 1950 and 1960, Murray Bowen began to develop an integrative theory of the family which he called “family systems theory” (FST). FST describes the family as one emotional unit rather than a collection of autonomous people. The theory describes humans as living in relationships with emotional connections. These connections pass the anxiety of family members to each member of the family system along interconnected pathways. This idea was a departure from the linear causation theories espoused at the time Bowen proposed his theory. Bowen described anxiety—defined in this project as a reaction to a threat that is real or imagined—as existing in two foundational forms, chronic and acute. Chronic anxiety can be passed through family generations and often shows up in recurring generational patterns and similarities. Although family systems theory was developed based on the assumption that humans are a product of evolution, this project has shown the connection between FST and biblical doctrines and theology. This project has shown that FST can be a valuable tool for Pastors and parents as they observe their congregation or family’s emotional reactivity. It also shows that through a better understanding of the doctrine of sanctification and the body of Christ, they will improve their own family’s emotional connections and bring about a healthier family system."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://spark.bethel.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1415\u0026context=etd"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127781335105536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:49:22.460Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:38:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:22:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5c9fc6a7-b48f-4631-8be4-f65872460b8a","accessControl_ssim":["8e45fd84-07bc-47e7-9609-3fd8c29e102a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Study of the Ministry of Re-Parenting (Parenting) of Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Jos, Nigeria"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:38:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:51:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0dccfc28-5d43-4de8-a211-5d132e32d62f"],"hasLease_ssim":["821de2f4-d3b0-49a2-98fe-6d9e5962342f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry (Ambridge, PA)"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry L. Even people who claim the Christian faith struggle with building healthy, happy, wholesome marriages that will endure for a lifetime. This deterioration of marriage tears at the fabric of the nuclear family, which also affects the health of the church family. In an attempt to curb the weakening marriages in my ministry setting, I proposed to lead a marriage retreat which focused on marriage as covenant, and which equipped couples with communication skills and conflict resolution techniques. My premise was that people can find hope for their marriages when they embrace God's ideal, which means living together in a covenant relationship and equipping themselves with proper relational tools. We examined how covenant theology and the theology of communication can inform our marriages. In addition, couples learned how to reveal their thoughts and feelings to their spouse more effectively, and how destructive poor communication can be to any relationship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129193003614208,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:11:48.733Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:50:42Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:26:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5d08a63d-a9ba-4a38-9794-acccef2be9b4","accessControl_ssim":["c0cb49e0-53cb-4a79-9d1d-0f0f56de6552"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Factors related to stress as it affects married students and their spouses at Columbia International University"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:50:41Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:51:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["078da10b-e2af-45ea-8368-4031ec343af7"],"hasLease_ssim":["01a83f5e-d743-4082-91d1-ea552b05a98f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Biblical Seminary and School of Missions"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard Higgins"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Brion M Burns"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Biblical Seminary and School of Missions of Columbia International University"],"subject_tesim":["Stress (Psychology)","Students--Religious life","Families--Religious life","Columbia International University","Students--Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Stress can have a powerful influence upon the lives, marriages, and families of university students.
