Matthew"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The congregants of First Baptist Church, Oak Ridge, Tennessee are like people in many churches around the United States. They are long-time church-goers who have attended Sunday school lessons and heard sermons on biblical texts enough to breed a familiarity that can prevent further insight. The preacher must find a way to bypass familiarity, allowing hearers to experience the text anew. This study measures how six sermons employing humor subvert expectations to give a renewed experience of Jesus’ descriptions of the Kingdom of God in the parables in Matthew’s Gospel.Twelve participants were interviewed in three sessions over six weeks to measure how effective humor is in communicating the complex and counter-cultural Kingdom of God that Jesus expresses in the parables. The group was interviewed together in three semi-structured sessions to allow participants to give their insights and experiences with limited researcher prompting.Participant responses indicate that humor indeed aided in experiencing familiar parables with a new perspective, a sense of personal interaction, and a desire to act upon the principles of the Kingdom as presented in the sermons. Humor can provide a fresh experience for preachers and congregations alike. Further study should be conducted in utilizing humor to preach texts of other biblical genres, such as the Hebrew prophets, proverbs, psalms, and epistles. I did this by researching books and periodicals and a grief seminar which included a before and after survey. This should be a time of great hope as it can assess its place in the Kingdom of God and plan for its role in the future.  Currently the functional ministries of the church are in question as to their effectiveness both within the local body and in their impact on the local community. This practicum/project is centered on the church as a manifestation of the Kingdom of God. As part of the Kingdom, the ecclesia can be evaluated and effectively measured as to its functional ministries.  In this project, the following steps were taken. The methodology employed provided ways of measuring the church biblically, theologically, practically, and in terms of its spiritual vitality. The chief finding was the need to break out of old patterns and practices of ministry. Parabolic interpretation has changed over the centuries with parables no longer viewed as allegory, but now understood as metaphors with extended meaning. In review of the purpose, Jewish source, nature, and language of parables this project examined how contemporary preachers can use Jesus' parables to communicate the message of God's Kingdom. Although the gospel of the kingdom contains the four dimensions of evangelism, discipleship, community, and social justice, most ministries have stressed the first two and neglected the latter two.  This study creates and teaches a four-dimensional model that is informed by Third World theological insights and the biblical theme of the kingdom.  A library survey provides the biblical, theological, and historical content of the model.  Chapter two focused on the kingdom in the modern missionary movement and the Nazareth passage (Luke 4:16-30).  The passage is used as evidence that the kingdom theme holds both spiritual and social interpretations in a kind of tension.  Chapter three studies Third World perspectives, including the challenges posed by liberation theology. Chapter four provides an overview and assessment of ministry to internationals in the USA.  It considers the four dimensions and their integration into the new model.
