I contend that pastors and the church are best served if the incoming first-year pastor has received some measure of significant transitional guidance and training prior to their appointment. Some denominations prepare their pastors accordingly and implement requirements that allow them to acquire guidance and training that will help them in their transition. My project is seen from the lens of the United Methodist Church which provides a short transitional period for pastors and churches to come together to confirm if the “new marriage” is a fit for both pastor and church. The purpose of this project is to capture first-year experiences and stories of pastors in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME) to identify common ideologies that there is a need for significant guidance and substantial training prior to their appointment. Perhaps some other ideas and suggestions may arise from this study.My methodology entails qualitative research in the form of a survey that was used to gather data on the views of new pastors in the CME Church. United Methodist provides resources of information to their pastors to help facilitate their transition process before they take ownership of a new appointment. My mission is to build upon their transition process which includes appointing a transition team to the pastor.This project revealed there is a need for more substantial training and guidance for first-year pastors in the CME Church. The examination of the lives of pastors, leaders, and lay leaders defined as servant leaders based on Patterson's doctoral work, helped in the development of an attribute-driven virtue-focused servant leadership development model. The aim of this study is to show churches can use a mentoring model to help experienced teachers transfer practical knowledge to trainees and multiply available, trained teachers. A secondary aim is to show that the mentoring model matches biblical principles. This study, through an integrative review and critical analysis of literature, explores the biblical, theological foundations of teacher training, surveys the development of teacher training in the church, and based on the Bible and history presents a model for teacher apprenticeship. Preparation involved research in understanding the larger culture of our country, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the context of the ministry and understanding a clear theological purpose justifying the project. Some collaboration between the Jerusalem United Holy Church and other agencies was part of the project, especially in identifying the children and exposing them to positive experiences. The project involved training mentors for the children by use of a PowerPoint presentation and measuring the effectiveness with pre- and post-tests. Mentoring, or life-into-life ministry, is the most intense form of community and therefore holds potential to stimulate the most intense spirituality. In a survey of current literature, this study noted the dramatic explosion of mentoring into the everyday life of our culture.  The current relevance and effectiveness of the biblical, historical, and current insights on mentoring were tested among seminary students and women's lay ministries and a paradigm for mentoring was constructed from the results. Many of these students become actively involved in the life of the church throughout the period of their study.  However, many others do not.  This project presents a strategy for integrating students into the life of a church.  Mentoring provides an ideal model for involving an entire congregation in ministry to and with students.  Based on a theological framework and using lessons learned from history, demography and ethnography, a three-pronged model of mentoring (visitation/evangelism, mentoring and hospitality) is developed.  The model was tested successfully in Knox Presbyterian Church, Toronto, found next to the University of Toronto.  The study is in three parts.  The first is a theoretical and analytical basis for a programme of mentoring. The second provides a practical manual for establishing a mentoring community in a local church. After fifteen weeks of discipleship training, test scores indicated that the mentored group had an edge over the non-mentored.
