Evidence of the effectiveness was provided as participants completed a personal vision statement.  Twelve women participated in a retreat, four-week small group experience and concluding celebration.  All said the experience positively impacted their ability to deal with midlife issues. A qualitative research methodology was employed with use of a standardized open-ended questionnaire.  Responses of the men revealing their life issues and religious/spiritual attitudes were placed in dialogue with theorists of men's studies and relevant theological themes.  Explanations were given as to why men are exiting the churches, including the church's failure to connect with male mid-life issues. Its importance lies primarily in the fact that it can be utilized by the pastor while counseling in the local church.  The theory and practice of dream use has been used largely in the present century by psychoanalysts for the treatment of psychological illness.  This is the first attempt in a doctoral thesis to apply dream sequences of healthy females to the developmental tasks of the life structure for use by pastors in counseling.  It is my belief that the intentional awareness of the use of dreams can provide an approach to the care of parishioners which enriches all elements of the counseling process.
