Using a mixed methods approach to descriptive research, the author researched biblical and historical methods of discipleship, ministerial formation, modern research in mentoring, and surveyed chaplains about personal experiences with mentors during their early military careers. While not all Reserve/Guard chaplains pastor congregations, those who do are subject to special tensions.  The reserve chaplain faces both philosophical and functional role expectations that come from a variety of sources: the military, the civilian congregation served by the chaplain, the chaplain's endorsing agency, and the ever-present realization that if mobilized he or she would have to leave his/her civilian congregation to be with and minister to Reserve soldiers.  A research questionnaire was developed by the author to identify tensions resulting from the dual role ministry. The first hypothesis, that there would be significant disagreement (defined as 15 percentage points) between the chaplains and civilian clergy on the issues surveyed, was proven false.  The data did support the second hypothesis, which stated that chaplains would be more informed than the civilian clergy on questions involving the chaplain-denominational relationship.
