To accomplish this task, this investigation uses a detailed literature review to provide a rationale and a theological context for churches to serve as a conduit for economic empowerment. Additionally, it presents and analyzes secondary data from the independent sector to determine the current level of economic programs which are being organized by churches today.  A case analysis of the economic empowerment techniques used by churches involved in the Industrial Areas Foundation is also introduced.  Thirdly, interviews with pastors of several churches with economic assistance/empowerment programs are included. Students attended lectures on the theology of church, spirituality, and the poor.  Speakers were invited to describe ministries to the poor.  Students selected ministries and received supervision at poverty sites.  A questionnaire was designed to reveal any attitudinal changes in students' perceptions of church, spirituality, and the poor resulting from the course 'Experiences in Ministry.' The project's methodology includes a study of pivotal church documents such as those from Vatican II, Medellin and Puebla.  The author concludes that the Roman Catholic branch of Latin American liberation theology is an expression of Catholic social thought.  In addition this theology is a new movement which grows out of a specific Latin American context.
