Biblical references for giving are considered in context and for application in a postmodern world. Stewardship's development is traced to its formation at the height of 'modern' confidence in humanity's ability to master money and economic systems. This confidence is contrasted with Jacques Ellul's analysis of money's ability to control human lives and divert them from God's purposes. A stewardship campaign that is based on postmodern principles is descibed, and its effectiveness evaluated. The epochal shift, from modernity to postmodernity is described in terms of epistemology, authority, and progress. A reinterpretation of the law/gospel dialectic and a collection of homiletic tools are offered to address this shift. The reflection of a focus group on a series of sermon demonstrates that a reinterpretation of the law/gospel dialectic, assisted by new models of preaching, can address the unique challenges of a postmodern context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126689561968640,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:32:01.265Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:39:43Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:03:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"184b6101-befd-412d-bf43-f0365e6fc958","accessControl_ssim":["ec66e4f0-9ff4-45a9-bdb0-40b2e025d070"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching law/gospel theology in a postmodern world"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:39:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:50:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d7f7e6ec-dce2-46ba-96d3-4ecf40c0feff"],"hasLease_ssim":["1ec97e6a-1ea1-4934-b98c-77cd9d75e215"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael Rogness"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Nathan P Sager"],"publisher_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Postmodernism","Law and gospel","Lutheran preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis is that 'preaching Law and Gospel can be strengthened by rethinking the traditional categories in response to the challenges of the contemporary context.' The first part of this study describes the Lutheran homiletical theology of Law and Gospel from the perspective of Scripture, the writings of Martin Luther, and writings in the Lutheran tradition that suggest new applications of Law and Gospel. The second part offers a Law/Gospel theology of preaching in light of these characteristics of postmodernism: constructed interpretation, feelings over reason, pessimism, the supernatural, and connectedness. A final part outlines comments from a responding team supporting the study's understanding of the Lutheran tradition, Scripture, preaching, the contemporary context, and the general effectiveness of
