Research explored three biblical metaphors toward a servant leadership development framework: servant, shepherd, and steward. A survey of 110 field team leaders and ten interviews with national leaders responsible for leadership development revealed the need for a biblically grounded paradigm, unique spiritual disciplines for leaders, better equipping for shepherding care of followers, clearer focus toward role complexity, and leaders experiencing greater fulfillment in their calling. The examination of the lives of pastors, leaders, and lay leaders defined as servant leaders based on Patterson's doctoral work, helped in the development of an attribute-driven virtue-focused servant leadership development model. Jesus' model of servant leadership is perfect and relevant for every congregation and its various organizations. This model of leadership ensures growth and health in the life of the church. Leadership is the key to the internal life of the congregation, as well as to its relationship with the outer world and fruitfulness in that world. The author designed a leadership training course consisting of eight sessions, in which the participants studied leadership models from the Old Testament and the New Testament. The eight lessons were biblically based, but they were also enhanced by leadership and congregational studies from such professional scholars as Edwin H Friedman, Peter L Steinke, and Diana Butler Bass. Each of the sessions included lecture, discussion, evaluation, and personal and group assessments.
