The examination of the lives of pastors, leaders, and lay leaders defined as servant leaders based on Patterson's doctoral work, helped in the development of an attribute-driven virtue-focused servant leadership development model. Participants took a mission trip to visit a rural church school in Haiti and were then interviewed about their experience. Family systems theory and the theology of service and relationships informed the project and the interpretation of the outcomes. New, lasting interpersonal bonds among the travelers were evident, as were strengthened ties to the sister institutions. Using a qualitative method, caregivers shared their stories answering the question: What were the experiences of 'burnout' which contributed to developing codependent moments in your caregiving relations? Codependent moments are defined as those moments when the caregiver is disabled by the issues shared by the person seeking care. The thesis uses literature dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, narratives about the war and its aftermath, biblical exegetical material on the language of service, theological writings and personal interviews with eight combat veterans of the Vietnam War. Virtually all of the veterans were engaged in service for their own healing. Korean scholars to date follow an old tradition which derives 'diakonos' from 'dia' (through) and 'konis' (dust.)  But this derivation is a case of confusion of 'diakonio' (pulvere, to in the dust) with 'diakoneo' (to serve.)  The author exegetes Acts 6 discussing the Grecian Jews, the Hebrews, and the Samaritans. The data from one hundred clergy and lay leaders reveals that both clergy and lay participate fully in three primary functions of ministry.  Priest's tend to emphasize the ordering and meaning giving functions, while laity emphasize the serving function.  Clergy exercise leadership in the ministries of worship, education, and pastoral care.  Laity lead in the ministries of stewardship, evangelism, and service. The author concludes that the permanent diaconate as an ordained office of ministry should be discontinued and that the transitional diaconate should be retained as an ordained office, but should be revised to respond to the servant mission of the church.
