This study explores the importance of symbols expressed in dreams, what may appear as nonsensical spontaneous comments, and uncharacteristic behaviors of patients at the end of life. The workshops are designed to inform and develop skills interpreting symbols to enhanced palliative care. Staff reports indicate the calming benefits that interpreting symbols extend to the dying patient. A variety of methods for approaching case consultations have been primarily physician-focused, leaving the role of the clinical ethicist from the perspective of the family overlooked.  Indicating a gap in the process of end-of-life decision making, family members identified seven categories about their experience of decision making. The pastor has a wonderful opportunity to stand alongside of these durign a most difficult time in their lives. The project is presented in five sections including why this is a necessary ministry, a survey of the literature, interviews with persons who have cared for a terminally ill person, and recommendations as to further studies. Using the qualitative research method, Grounded Theory, the project collected data through individual interviews with eight staff physicians, six house staff, and seven nurses. All interviewees acknowledged that overtreatment of dying patients makes working in an Intensive Care Unit difficult. House staff acknowledged feelings of failure at the death of their patients. Staff physicians acknowledged that it is easier to continue treating than to make a decision to stop, thus avoiding difficult conversations or ethical decisions. This paper presents the theological understanding of hope in both the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament.  The issue of theodicy and the meaning of suffering is also discussed.  The different theological understandings of hope for this paper come from Jürgen Moltmann, Wolfhart Pannenberg and John Macquarrie.  A theology of dying and pastoral care techniques are described for the different stages of grief.  These techniques are helpful to pastoral caregivers in providing hope for those who are dying.  The community of faith and their importance in providing hope for the dying is not addressed.  Case studies are presented to describe how the author provided hope to the dying through pastoral care techniques. Those spiritual concerns may be considered to be fourfold: fear of God's punishment, reassurance of God's acceptance, reassurance of salvation, support in faith to deal with a life-threatening illness.  The methodology of this project is centered on an approach to discovering data through the use of a survey instrument. The project sought, through introducing them to persons from various hospital disciplines, to provide the holistic approach to caring for the sick and dying patient. Participants were given an opportunity to visit patient wards and to reflect upon their experience through the peer group process.  Participants were to read three books during the three months. With emphasis on Christian value-oriented education and counseling the participants in the project were provided the opportunity to grow not only in clinical knowledge, but in theological and spiritual knowledge as well.  Control and experimental groups were involved.  Six one-hour training sessions and small group discussions were held. There was a significant decrease in death anxiety and uncomfortableness in sharing with others on the subject of death and dying. It describes the selection of training groups from four different Protestant churches of various sizes, with a total of forty-one participants, uses five instruments to gather evaluative data on the effects of the training on the participants, presents and evaluates the results, and draws conclusions.  The evaluative data includes opinion and feelings reported by the participants and their pastors, together with a pre and post questionnaire on attitudes and a report of the participants' involvement in such ministry in the year after training. The pre and post questionnaire showed several changes in the participants' understandings of how people respond to terminal illness, death, and grief, and in participants' attitudes about their own deaths.
