This project seeks toreclaim union with Christ as the core of Christian identity and to develop a curriculum forteaching this concept. Psychologists consider the formation of personal identity to be the boundarymilestone to adulthood. A stable sense of identity provides a rootedness that allows aperson to weather the changes of his life, social network, and the world.Without a stable identity, the person may well look to the world to make sense of himself,leaving him vulnerable to the loudest voice of the day whether that is media, individuals,or government. Recent changes in society have made forming a stable identity far more difficultthan in previous generations. The mobility of society has removed the identity of place;the breakup of families has removed the identity of family; expanding horizons ofeducation and career have blurred class and occupational identities.The church is not immune to these difficulties. A personal identity is only as strong as the ideas and principles on which it is built. The concept of union with Christ gives believers a framework of identity based on who they are in Christ. In Christ, believers are given meaning and purpose as they join God’s mission of reconciliation. In union with Christ, the image of God damaged by sinis restored. This restores the believer to what he was created to be. This restorationprovides an identity which does not diminish individuality but instead allows believers tocelebrate their different giftedness within the framework of common spiritual union. Inrelationship with the Creator and grounded in truth, the believer is less susceptible to themanipulations and falsehoods of culture. Theological scholars, local church leaders, and pulpit preachers have discussed and debated the correct way to describe Christ’s work of atonement. However, little concern has been shown when communicating atonement theology toward those who have been injured by trauma and abuse.  This study aims to provide a platform for the abused to share their stories concerning their spiritual formation through the lens of their experience both with trauma and theological teaching by church leaders.  The use of terms trauma and abuse are defined by the participants in the study albeit as broad or narrow as the participant determines by their own definition.To test this hypothesis, a survey was distributed to the entire congregation of a medium-sized Mid-Western Evangelical congregation concerning their grasp of atonement theological terms as well as their perceived characterization of the God of their understanding, connectedness with others in the congregation, and grasp of theological terms relating to atonement theology. Following a four-week teaching series, a second similar survey was conducted to gauge movement in the areas of study.  Additionally, all survey respondents were given the opportunity to privately schedule individual interviews with the researcher to share their insights and experiences with trauma and the church teaching on atonement theology.   Church survey responses were scored by numerical averages.  The results showed a significant increase in knowledge of atonement theology and small increases in correcting characterization of God and connectedness with fellow believers in the congregation. The thesis attempts to restore prominence and cohesion of an ontological construct, whereby function and structure, are the subordinate product defined by the ontological theological perspective. The effects are far reaching for theological definitions of the essential nature of the Trinity, the believer and the church; representing a paradigmatic shift in theological understanding, affecting profoundly the nature existential Christocentric Christianity. The ontological theology of Trinity contrasts with the relational subordination, authority-submission proponents and opponents, in substance, in relationship and in function. The recovery of apostolicity as an ontological attribute of Godhead provides significant insight and cohesion to the ontological Trinitarian proposal.The effects upon the believer ontologically are contrasted with the religious disposition and the positional judicial approach to salvation. The prototypical shift occurs in the Person of Jesus-Christ to an existential reality originated in Trinity and replicated ontologically in the believer. The nature of humankind is thereby reinterpreted giving definition to the “spiritual man” as the sole form of legitimate existence that is biblically normalized and warranted.The ontological primacy provides an alternate construct to the historical structural understanding of church that has not changed since the early patristic period.  The proposal emerging from this exegesis is a model of church: ontological and apostolic, originated, [re]sourced, and incarnate from the nature of Trinity, demonstrating undeniably that it is impossible for the Church of divine intent to exist outside of the three persons of the Godhead. Christo-centricity restores Church to the origin, source and 'telos'. Present day observations may exemplify distanciation of contemporary expressions of church from ontological definitions. The author chose the season of Lent to preach a series of sermons in his congregation on the subject of fasting.
