Two sets of skills are employed: a system design whereby the goals and format of the project are delineated, implemented and evaluated; and, theological reflection in which personal stories are shared and reflected upon in the light of faith.  The project was developed with six parish couples who shared their stories of faith and commitment with couples who were preparing for marriage. The study attempts to ascertain if those ordained by the church claim to be in the experience of entire sanctification or if the doctrine is understood.  Each ordinand in the United States and Canada in 1980 was questioned concerning his understanding, experience, and the methodology employed by the Board of Orders and Relations in evaluating qualifications for the role of elder. Questionnaires were also sent to the chairman of the Board of Orders and Relations of each district.  Although results of the questionnaire show strengths in the examination procedures, weaknesses also appear. In both contexts, that of mysticism and that of psychotherapy, paradoxes are set up in such a fashion that significant life change becomes possible for the mystical seeker/therapy client.  The process of change that is initiated by paradoxes is described using the models of the respective fields. The writer evaluates materials recommended by James Kennedy's Evangelism Explosion, Campus Crusade for Christ, American Baptists, Southern Baptists, United Methodists, and those recommended by the three major Lutheran bodies.  He demonstrates that many of the materials recommended by non-Lutherans are consistent with the teachings of the confessions while some of the 'Lutheran' materials are not. After reviewing three currently available programs, the Kerber Model is presented which uses a variety of techniques to facilitate couple communication and discovery.  The model was proof tested in a retreat setting and results are assessed.
