Insight was gained into the way patients viewed their health problem and prepared for entering the hospital for surgery. The impact of surgery, the effect of anesthetic, and complications in the healing process were explored. Patients saw their surgery not just as an isolated event, but as part of their life experience. Most interesting are the ways in which patients compensate for the troubling, frightening, and chaotic aspects of their experience, reminding us that, above all, this is a human experience involving love, care, laughter, sensitivity, hope, being there, trust, calming, sharing the suffering and connecting with what we believe in beyond ourselves."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721729470234624,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:26:30.074Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:45:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:15:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"018cb33d-7665-4a49-a565-359f9c2c4fe6","accessControl_ssim":["a901fe18-5e93-4191-b11f-7cc13bdf1d01"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Worship: structure and freedom in celebration of God; a course in worship"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:45:51Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:09:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["116ca33f-fb20-49a2-ab32-c2b666745f0c"],"hasLease_ssim":["9d44456e-f14f-4f2a-89f6-ace2923763e1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["University of the South"],"advisor_tesim":["Marion Josiah Hatchett"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Nancy M Turner"],"publisher_tesim":["University of the South School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Worship"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project, a foundational worship course designed for Master of Divinity students at a highly ecumenical seminary, proposes that students, including those from non-liturgical traditions, benefit from a thorough grounding in the traditional structures and history of worship as part of their ministerial formation. 'Servant evangelism' is explored from a biblical perspective and advocated as a model for today's church. Emphasis is given to North American Baptist Conference churches, the author's denomination. The approach taken includes: 1. Surveying 110 NAB churches; 2. Interviewing six pastors (4 NAB and 2 others); 3. Teaching a class on servant evangelism in the author's home church. Class outlines for these ten sessions are included in an appendix. Additional chapters focus on biblical and theological perspectives; teaching and promoting servant evangelism in the church; evaluation and suggestions for further application. Of special value to pastors are the chapters on teaching servant evangelism and servant evangelism as a strategy for today's church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719553826029568,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:51:55.218Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:43:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:29:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"df05638b-a9f8-47c1-99de-1bdedf793004","accessControl_ssim":["f21466f9-1f44-4f7d-8aab-4d7381781e01"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Empowering the adult and youth laity to reach unchurched inner-city African-American teens: through a contemporary outreach ministry called J.A.M. Many churches are closed systems when it comes to dealing with its young. These 'closed systems' focus on the youth of their parishioners but fail to venture out into the community to those that are trapped in poor communities or ghettos. There is a widening gap between the 'haves' and 'have nots' in all of society and particularly amongst middle and lower class blacks. How does a middle class black church in the inner-city reach out to lower class youth surrounding its church? How do we empower the laity of a congregation to effectively reach unchurched youth? These are the questions that I will explore in this professional project. The vehicle we will use to get from Hip Hop back to the 'saving station' in the church is a contemporary outreach ministry called JAM (Jesus and Me). My goals were to 1) provide a place where young people could be transformed and feel safe, 2) create small groups that would allow the students to share more intimately and experience growth along with accountability, and 3) equip volunteers, both adult and youth, to carry out ministry to unchurched youth in the inner city. As a result of this project lives were transformed, volunteers were empowered to become ministers, and a bridge was built from the church into the community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130339301654528,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:30:01.928Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:40:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:31:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e0f3d61d-e61f-4496-80a4-9429e5df3a6d","accessControl_ssim":["79b08a14-dfc1-4670-ba52-6b16ec0ae375"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Leadership in the face of antagonism: identifying, ministering to and limiting the impact of antagonists in the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:40:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:34:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["614176d9-f055-4ef3-be04-797b3de53a2c"],"hasLease_ssim":["fe05d8f5-211a-4fee-a38b-d324ffe3d3a5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Nazarene Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Roy Rotz"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David J Samson"],"keyword_tesim":["Congregations--Internal conflict"],"publisher_tesim":["Nazarene Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian sociology--Protestant churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes that strong and informed leadership is necessary when facing an antagonist in the church. A final part outlines comments from a responding team supporting the study's understanding of the Lutheran tradition, Scripture, preaching, the contemporary context, and the general effectiveness of the model."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716508503375872,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:03:30.972Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:37:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:09:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"73937dba-f09e-4bf9-ad09-7511cfc95a00","accessControl_ssim":["8fbbe478-6851-4b8d-bca5-9724bfd90ca0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching about death today"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:37:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:31:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["91050aca-7f2b-4bb7-94bd-3e9b999a19af"],"hasLease_ssim":["58b4ba1b-3768-48ea-80bf-466fbc42d759"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Brite Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Joseph R Jeter"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Thomas N Potter"],"publisher_tesim":["Brite Divinity School of Texas Christian University"],"subject_tesim":["Expository preaching","Death"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["A study of preaching about death was complemented by the review of four semons preached at one congregation to a selected listening group. The terminally ill and dying are privileged to the vision of God. The research helps us to become more aware of the ways in which God's Mystery is revealed in the final transition of life. It can also help health care professionals see that the mystic path is a route for radical transformation of the self. The lived experiences of the terminally ill are untapped resources. Their stories can help the Church better understand the spiritual dimension of the struggle with suffering, illness, and death and help the Church envision new ways for delivering pastoral care to dying persons. This study is qualitative in nature, blending Grounded Theory methods, as developed by Glaser and Strauss, and a heuristic method. The study concludes with implications for ministry to the terminally ill."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720457338880000,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:06:16.874Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:35:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:55:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9c6569f7-d86a-4389-9c28-b1fdc9da79e7","accessControl_ssim":["0b5e71d9-8ddb-444a-af65-716c9ba4ddc3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Money worship: a window into the idols of the heart"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:35:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:42:43Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["08993798-3ccf-4b57-bd29-0c2c51d231fb"],"hasLease_ssim":["ccfd0c69-f43d-4e03-a905-a586e92e29dd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Westminster Seminary California"],"advisor_tesim":["James C Petty"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Phillip B Paul"],"publisher_tesim":["Westminster Seminary California"],"subject_tesim":["Money","Conduct of life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The aim of this project is to help people better understand the ways in which the love of money can ruler their lives.
