However, the change from a closed sect to an open church has brought changes in their understanding of a peace commitment. This paper focuses on peace as a model of hermeneutics in the church. The history of the church is investigated to uncover a hermeneutic. To discover the contemporary understanding of peace, a questionnaire is mailed to 278 Brethren in Christ ministers. The returns are compared with the historical research. Results show strong support for a peace commitment with new understandings and applications. The author clarifies his theological understanding and traces through journal entries his initial experiential involvement in healing ministry. He shares reflections/learnings which may be of value to others interested in beginning a practice of healing ministry. Among these learnings is the importance of empathic prayer and the engendering of hope. Conveying God's care and desire for wholeness for creation is crucial. Healing ministry should be an integral part of pastoral care ministry as well as of the congregation's life and ministry. The project sought to bridge the gulf between worship and social justice groups which exists in an average parish and to bring these groups into creative relationship. The project had four goals: 1) to develop an adult education curriculum; 2) to utilize the curriculum in three diverse parish settings (urban, rural and campus ministry); 3) to assess the curriculum; and 4) to provide information for a revision of the curriculum. The methodology derived directly from the goals. The principal curriculum resource was a study book, The Noise of Solemn Assemblies: a Primer on Liturgy and Social Justice. It was taught within three diverse settings and evaluated using a number of instruments and criteria. Although the gospel of the kingdom contains the four dimensions of evangelism, discipleship, community, and social justice, most ministries have stressed the first two and neglected the latter two. This study creates and teaches a four-dimensional model that is informed by Third World theological insights and the biblical theme of the kingdom. A library survey provides the biblical, theological, and historical content of the model. Chapter two focused on the kingdom in the modern missionary movement and the Nazareth passage (Luke 4:16-30). The passage is used as evidence that the kingdom theme holds both spiritual and social interpretations in a kind of tension. Chapter three studies Third World perspectives, including the challenges posed by liberation theology. Chapter four provides an overview and assessment of ministry to internationals in the USA. It considers the four dimensions and their integration into the new model. Chapter five summarizes the research findings and how they are taught in a cross-cultural workshop."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719432028684288,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:49:59.063Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:39:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:54:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9aedc832-a62c-400a-a6ff-0deec35dc68e","accessControl_ssim":["fa80f246-895a-43c8-afa9-16e0e3d8b26f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A study of the bi-vocational ministry with focus on American Baptists in New Jersey"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:39:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:39:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f8dd8d27-688d-4aa5-af17-ea5eeda23125"],"hasLease_ssim":["0e25aa52-c044-4c60-b977-1d2b9d546548"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Glenn A Koch"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["William W LeConey"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Clergy--Salaries, etc","Clergy--Secular employment","Case method","American Baptist Churches in the U.S.A"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The recent inflationary spiral has affected Christian churches by greatly reducing the funds which support traditional ministries. The reductions include the salaries of ordained clergy. At the same time there are trained, ordained ministers who, for varying reasons, work in secular vocations. Some assume the dual responsibility of providing professional leadership to churches while continuing in their present occupation. This study looks at this bi-vocationalism among American Baptist churches in New Jersey and examines whether there is adequate biblical, theological and historical validity to support such a form of ministry. The primary method of research involves research questionnaires, interviews and observations. Other methods include case studies and a library survey. The study concludes that bi-vocationalism has roots in Paul's 'tent-making'. It is consistent with an incarnational theology based on God's involvement in the world through Jesus Christ. It provides trained professionals for the small church. The purpose of using these narratives was to tear down stereotypes of the Jewish people by allowing Christians to enter and explore the life experiences of Jews. A standard library research method established the theoretical support for this approach. The study included a group experiment which involved seven Christians from varied social backgrounds. Group testing was conducted at the beginning and end of the experiment using the A-S Scale found in The Authoritarian Personality by Adorno et al (1950). The group read five works of Jewish literature. Each member kept a reading log of personal responses to the literature and participated in group discussions. The results showed little change for the group as a whole. Individually, there were changes of both increased anti-Semitism and decreased anti-Semitism. The reading logs revealed that the participants struggled over their thoughts about the Jews. Frankly, one cannot truly assess the results adequately because the time was inadequate."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131150048034816,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:42:55.116Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:39:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:46:18Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ff72c438-cf31-4164-abe0-33ba4e5b3fd2","accessControl_ssim":["e836b821-005e-4e9e-be9f-2a2d96d438e4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Responsive urban Bible education: formulating objectives for Manna Bible Institute, Philadelphia, PA"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:39:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:26:10Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["85046ddf-3fb3-4c4a-9868-da34f9d7461c"],"hasLease_ssim":["cbde218f-94ec-4b21-84d8-6ff8f5c307be"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Janet Chartier"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert J Figge"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["City missions","Church schools","Manna Bible Institute (Philadelphia, Pa)","Bible--Study"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project asks what objectives Manna Bible Institute should develop so that its ministry of biblical education might achieve the maximum relevance for its students and graduates. Manna Bible Institute is an interracial and multi-ethnic school in the inner city of Philadelphia. The first chapter introduces the concepts of biblical education and urban ministry. The second chapter identifies the biblical and historical rationale for the school's ministry by tracing the tradition of biblical instruction from ancient Israel to contemporary evangelicalism. Chapter three provides the theological and social framework for the project by identifying biblical concepts that support responsive urban ministry. Chapter four traces the development of the school from the dual influences of Bible education and evangelical social concern. Chapters five to seven discuss a survey which evaluates the school's responsiveness to the needs and interests of its students and graduates. In recent years, there has been a greater emphasis on Hispanic ministries in this region which has resulted in the establishment of new local churches. There are six congregations that serve Hispanic families. A common problem affects the growth and development of these churches. The Conference has not provided adequate training for the pastors and lay persons of the congregations. In this study five of these churches engage in a six-session training project aimed at motivating the participants for local mission. Every session begins with a keynote address followed by a question and answer period and three different discussion workshops. Each workshop deals with a specific area of concern: missiology, Christian education, or Christian stewardship. The study provides a missiological framework based on biblical imperatives from the book of Acts. It refers to socio-cultural realities as well as denominational factors in the life of these congregations. The study suggests ways to aid Hispanic ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718352917102592,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:32:49.942Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:38:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:57:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a16b9a45-c4d9-4ae1-a32f-94692b82e8fc","accessControl_ssim":["4d6b4172-2fda-42b2-9144-3c802bd736d5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Yoruba cultural preaching"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:38:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:50:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["40832114-6bbc-456e-8788-2963964f1167"],"hasLease_ssim":["dd79e35a-9678-4eca-9324-a2fa02b9d237"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pacific School of Religion"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Isaiah Oladeji Falade"],"keyword_tesim":["Indigenization of worship"],"publisher_tesim":["Pacific School of Religion"],"subject_tesim":["Yoruba (African people)","Preaching--Study and teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project is about the role of preaching in the Yoruba Christian Churches.
