The author conducted a random sample survey of Latino (males) from different parishes in the Archdiocese of Denver, Colorado. The study included questionnaires, personal interviews and observations as well as consultations with pastors, parochial vicars and lay Latino leaders. Consumer culture tempts Christians to worship an idolatrous world of stuff. The preacher is called to speak a word of hope and offer strategies to face this modern giant.This project defines consumer culture, its affects on the health, environment, and debt load. Homiletical strategies are identified to expose its temptations then 'counter-script,' providing the listener biblical and theological resources to imagine a different way of spending time and resources. It reviews three congregations' attempts at confronting consumer temptations from the pulpit. This project was designed to help students in Thailand begin a process of searching for exegetical models useful in their setting, testing a thesis that patristic modes of biblical exegesis may prove helpful. Attention was also given to the adjunct fields of New Testament interpretation of the Old Testament and biblical interpretation in the non-Western world. Can it be used to improve communication skills (articulating, listening, self-disclosure, openness, and conflict resolution) of parishioners in a United States Air Force (USAF) chapel? This should be a time of great hope as it can assess its place in the Kingdom of God and plan for its role in the future.  Currently the functional ministries of the church are in question as to their effectiveness both within the local body and in their impact on the local community. This practicum/project is centered on the church as a manifestation of the Kingdom of God. As part of the Kingdom, the ecclesia can be evaluated and effectively measured as to its functional ministries.  In this project, the following steps were taken. The methodology employed provided ways of measuring the church biblically, theologically, practically, and in terms of its spiritual vitality. The chief finding was the need to break out of old patterns and practices of ministry. Benedictine values of stability, obedience and conversion are interpreted for a church community. The context is a small suburban Episcopal church beginning a new ministry with their recently arrived priest. In various group feedback sessions, listeners expressed their understanding of how Benedictine values can shape the spiritual life of the church community and become part of its vision. These factors include: spiritual preparation, leadership buy-in, the on-going communication of vision and philosophy, a healthy launch, congregational buy-in and successfully passing on the philosophical DNA of making disciples. The on-going communication of vision and philosophy was determined to be the most critical factor in this change process. This study also relates these factors to John Kotter's eight-stage process of change from his book Leading change (1996).
