Chapters 1 and 7 introduce and conclude.  Chapters 2-4 examine the history and problems of immigrants, church, and pastoral models respectively through academic research. Chapter 5 presents results of questionnaires and interviews. Two chronic problems are dysfunctionality of the church and marginalization of immigrants.  Chapter 6 proposes the contextual christological model. While not all Reserve/Guard chaplains pastor congregations, those who do are subject to special tensions.  The reserve chaplain faces both philosophical and functional role expectations that come from a variety of sources: the military, the civilian congregation served by the chaplain, the chaplain's endorsing agency, and the ever-present realization that if mobilized he or she would have to leave his/her civilian congregation to be with and minister to Reserve soldiers.  A research questionnaire was developed by the author to identify tensions resulting from the dual role ministry. Many of these students become actively involved in the life of the church throughout the period of their study.  However, many others do not.  This project presents a strategy for integrating students into the life of a church.  Mentoring provides an ideal model for involving an entire congregation in ministry to and with students.  Based on a theological framework and using lessons learned from history, demography and ethnography, a three-pronged model of mentoring (visitation/evangelism, mentoring and hospitality) is developed.  The model was tested successfully in Knox Presbyterian Church, Toronto, found next to the University of Toronto.  The study is in three parts.  The first is a theoretical and analytical basis for a programme of mentoring. The second provides a practical manual for establishing a mentoring community in a local church. Respondents to a written questionnaire participated in the placement process at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia between 1991 and 1994.  Results indicate that most of the women experienced pain or discriminatory practices during their search for permanent placement. The project consisted of five sessions with the young adult choir of Pendleton Street Baptist Church (Greenville, SC) in a retreat setting.  The group answered questionnaires and discussed how certain types of music met their spiritual needs and how it could be used to meet those of their generation.  The study concluded that hymnody, classical music and contemporary Christian music best met the needs of this particular group.
