A theoretical basis derived from Erickson's theory of ego development and the spiritual theologies of Nouwen and Macquarrie were used to critique and design a program for junior high students. Breakaway, a program of prayer and meditation (by Mark Link) was adapted and implemented with a group of sixty-one junior highs over a period of twenty-eight weeks. The program was evaluated by questionnaires and interviews with students and professional educators. Although the students did not increase their frequency of prayer, their understanding was broadened, they were using a greater variety of prayer forms, and showed a willingness to pray with other people. Further modifications of the program should use a greater variety of prayer forms, aids to prayer, environments for prayer, and voluntary participation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791125295280947200,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:09:51.574Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:11:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:33:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e6301ba3-343b-4688-93ea-120335810db8","accessControl_ssim":["ab171d3d-9734-44bc-be42-e3815d4e8bcd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Teaching and encouraging use of the Book of Common Prayer for daily private and family devotional use at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:11:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:42:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ae631633-31a0-427b-88a5-cda5f8eb69e3"],"hasLease_ssim":["aa422e4c-8da4-47db-8044-32717c7fed2e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Brite Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Howard W Stone"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Irvin S Mitchell"],"keyword_tesim":["Book of Common Prayer"],"publisher_tesim":["Brite Divinity School of Texas Christian University"],"subject_tesim":["Families--Religious life","Anglican Communion","St Paul's Episcopal Church (Gainesville, Tex)","Devotional literature","Liturgics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project is the writer's effort to encourage prayer in the homes of members using the Book of Common Prayer. This is a national program of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) which involves a congregation committing one year of making the issue of peace the center of their worship, study, and action. Each of the steps is viewed in the thesis. Some of the theological/biblical themes that emerge are: pneumatology and faith, conversion/spiritual transformation, confession, reconciliation and forgiveness, justification by grace, sanctification, freedom, baptism, prayer and meditation, worship, spiritual awakening, evangelism, and discipleship. Research is gathered from existing data and excerpts from over 30 taped interviews with persons who are either recovering alcoholics or are CD counselors in a treatment program and have some affiliation with the Christian faith. They were asked as to any theological/biblical themes they perceived in the twelve steps. The intent of this thesis is to assist in the construction of bridges for communication and understanding between those in AA and those in the church. It begins with an overview of the Oxford Group Movement and its 8 points and explores the birth of AA looking specifically at the lives of the co-founders. The thesis concludes with examples of how an understanding of the 12 steps can be used in ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126641922015232,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:31:15.832Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:09:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:37:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"eebe1856-0818-418a-a9a8-541b749fa760","accessControl_ssim":["32a2371d-bcb1-4d04-8408-4d26acae94d6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["This is the 'church' in Elliot Park: a case study in ecclesiology"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:09:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:57:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2814e944-849c-4593-9666-317022e05365"],"hasLease_ssim":["081147f4-8a4d-4a92-8250-9b20f85aee7d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Loren E Halvorson"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert A Solberg"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church--History of doctrines","Intimacy (Psychology)","Communities--Religious aspects","Christian life","Church group work","Church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The study in ecclesiology shows that persons who are open to the work of God's spirit among them are constantly involved--most often unknowingly--in a pilgrimage of 'ecclesial evolution' as the 'church,' through stages of 'pre-church,' 'emerging church,' and church, where the latter stage represents a more traditional theological description of a gathering of God's people. It states a clear theological definition for each of the stages and then uses personal interviews and the author's own experience in urban ministry as a participant observer to build case studies of each stage of the 'church' as these stages exist theologically and empirically among the residents of an inner city metropolitan community like Elliot Park.
