In order to test this thesis, Roman Catholic neophytes and 243 coordinators were surveyed.  Theological reflection on the responses to the survey and subsequent interviews held with people who are implementing the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults point up the responsibility that parish leaders have to engender the communities of empowerment similar to the small communities of the early church. The goal of the project is to provide pastors with a tithing seminar experience.  Data, collected from 71 pastors through a survey questionnaire, was analyzed and a seminar developed to stimulate an interest in tithing.  A four-week tithing program was implemented in a test local church by a pastor who attended a tithing seminar.  The pastors were equipped to assist believers and exposed to resources to help them lead to a tithing emphasis. A qualitative research methodology was employed with use of a standardized open-ended questionnaire.  Responses of the men revealing their life issues and religious/spiritual attitudes were placed in dialogue with theorists of men's studies and relevant theological themes.  Explanations were given as to why men are exiting the churches, including the church's failure to connect with male mid-life issues. The thesis uses literature dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, narratives about the war and its aftermath, biblical exegetical material on the language of service, theological writings and personal interviews with eight combat veterans of the Vietnam War. Virtually all of the veterans were engaged in service for their own healing. The author proposes that religious truth is always experiential and therefore necessarily participative (tangible), historical/evolutionary (non-eternal), and interpretive (non-intuitive).  Focus on the intuitive, eternal and intangible led Ralph Burhoe to develop a scientific theology, Duncan Howlett a rational-critical theology, and Peter Fleck a spiritually dualistic Christian theology in the early 1980s.
