Phenomenological and qualitative research methodology formed the framework of study, guided by perspectives of grounded research and symbolic interactionism.  Results identify principles for the development of this intergenerational group. It was discovered that the friendship and intergenerational relationships within the church which they experienced in childhood and adolescence contributed significantly to the generation and development of their faith, second only to the impact of their parents and family life. Based on extensive interviews with Jewish Theological Seminary-trained congregational rabbis in northern California, the nature of that authority is studied.  The project concludes that rabbis utilize an 'authority of process.' A handbook on apologetics was developed, after which it was then taught to two test groups totaling twenty-four participants.  Using a Likert-type scale, a pretest and posttest were administered to the participants to measure changes in attitude toward witnessing as a consequence of studying the handbook.  The results of the tests indicated that participants' attitude concerning their witnessing improved. As models of spiritual direction the author incorporated the work of Ignatius Loyola, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Studzinski, Gratton, Fischer, and Kelsey. Models of psychotherapy and pastoral counseling included Jung, Rogers, Oden, and Jackson.
