Since usual prayer forms are not helpful during times of emotional breakdown, the author designed a course in prayer, using both verbal and non-verbal modalities.  Using a phenomenological methodology, the study demonstrates that by expressing pain in a community of co-sufferers, the participants were able to discover new images of God, and new ways of praying while experiencing acute suffering. A Likert scale was used.  The results showed very little difference between ABC Wisconsin ministers and ABC USA ministers. Divorced clergy required to leave their parishes experience a second devastating loss, creating intense shame.  Ten clergy who remained in their parishes for three years, postdivorce, in two-hour interviews, report significant mutuality in dealing with the shame of divorce and with the loss both priest and parish suffer in clerical divorce. The thesis is that there is a body of contemporary American poetry which expresses themes that are in harmony with Lutheran theology.  The project includes an anthology of more than one hundred poems by nearly fifty twentieth-century writers organized under a variety of themes consistent with Lutheran theology. They provided data which proved this hypothesis: given the opportunity, ELC-PNG ministers and administrators can realistically reflect their socio-religious situations, accurately describe their needs in ministry and thereby develop continuing education programs to meet those needs. By means of a survey among 1,800 clergy in Minnesota, it was found that many clergy came into ministry from an extreme family system. The criteria to measure this are theological soundness, liturgical consistency, and pastoral effectiveness.  This study includes an overview of cultural and church responses to divorce, a comparison of Catholic and Lutheran theologies of marriage, an exegesis of biblical divorce texts, a local study assessing participants' evaluation of a ritual experience, and a theological discussion applying a theologia crucis and the law and gospel paradigm to the issue.
