Students were evaluated by empirical observation, that involved the student, a peer, and adviser, and the discipler, and reproducibility in a second small group.  The students practiced relational skills and the spiritual disciplines of: daily prayer, Bible reading, time stewardship, group accountability and journal keeping.  The discipler served as a mentor and as a model for the disciplines. He designed a questionnaire on the Likert Response model to measure commitment, fellowship, power, change, unity and values. This instrument was used as a pre-test and a post-test. His treatment involved a sermon series, a core group and a congregational retreat.  The data reveals that congregational unity increased during the implementation. The pastor felt motivated primarily by affiliation and friendship.  The laity felt the pastor was motivated primarily by socialized power.  A democratic leadership style was present. The motivation of potential participants may be blocked because the members fear they will be blamed for family weaknesses.  This project tests an intergenerational workshop which stresses six strengths of Black families.  A theology based on the belief that humans are created in God's image and on the NT image of the household of faith supports the project. The workshop considers the biblical families of Moses and Ruth.  It effectively attracts participants and enables the sponsoring committee to plan for follow-up. The study condenses general church growth theories and principles into their main principles and highlights unique features of growth in the middle-sized church.  It enumerates the distinctive features of United Methodist churches which may help or hinder growth.  The project then examines growth potential of a specific congregation.  It suggests a model for a five year growth plan and a process for implementing these recommendations. It provides an ideological critique of the four religious movements in American Jewry.  The study presents a sociological view of the nature of synagogue affiliation and the motivations and influences of synagogue membership.  It compares data on the American Jewry experience with affiliation data of other dominant religions represented in the United States. The majority of the project is dedicated to the needs assessment survey distributed to members of six synagogues in southern New Jersey.
