These words describe the dynamics which occur in pastoral care visits with older people.  The project states a brief definition of each word as a pastoral care concept.  It conducts a biblical word study and, through a questionnaire, asks peers in ministry (chaplains, visitation pastors, students) to critique the validity of the proposed approach. The project concludes that many old paradigms of preaching are still valid and should be reclaimed and mastered but new paradigms also are needed for this day. Writings of current authors in the areas of feminism and spirituality inform the project. It uses a communication model called systems thinking which views an organization as an holistic unit.  Component parts are seen in relationship to each other as well as to the organization as a whole.  The organization must be seen in its environmental context.  A systems model developed by Stafford Beer is selected. Beer's model identifies the functions of a system and demonstrates their relationship.  It portrays the channels which enable the expression of variety.  This paper identifies the functions of a local church as revealed in the Gospels and in the Book of Acts.  These functions are applied to the system model which is adapted to a local church organization. Four seminars held in the fall of 1986 were designed to explore how people age and how adult children can cope effectively with their parents in the new relationship which aging creates. The seminars included one session on understanding the aging process, another on relating to aging parents, a third on caring for aging parents and a fourth on available community resources. Aids such as books, audiotapes, weekly meetings and a guide were provided.  Research included an initial interview, an interim evaluation and a final evaluation (written and oral).
