It calls the churches to make this group a major focus from membership development in the 1980s and 1990s because of their vast numbers and their general attitude about believing without a felt need to belong to the church.  Two-fold research design: (1) narrative background to the generation's history and experience in the decades of the fifties through the mid-eighties; and (2) survey of religious experience and attitudes of 229 respondents, aged 25-36. Data from 59 questions analyzed by 10-church rank; religious types; six sub-samples; male/female; and born-again/not born-again. This study examines the thesis that a theology of the cross, issuing in realistic, non-violent strategies, provides the most appropriate basis for a ministry committed to peacemaking.  Critical factors that need to inform and guide the theology and praxis of any peacemaking ministry are considered.  The thesis is tested in dialogue with significant sources, with persons exposed to the project, and through use of a questionnaire-survey instrument. The project involves the drafting of a preliminary mission statement by the parish strategic planning committee, and the opportunity for reaction and input by the parishioners and organizations of parish to the preliminary statement.  A final version of the mission statement will then be developed through a parish leadership retreat weekend and a second drafting by the strategic planning committee.  The Parish Mission Statement will then be presented to the parish, and the adoption of the statement will take place through a signing of a parish covenant at the International Fair Liturgy in October 1983, and through adoption by a consensus of the parish council. Eight group meetings held during a four-month internship produced action-strategies in the intern's ministry which were favorably assessed by the group, intern, and author. The author concludes that the intern experienced andragogical learning about the issues studied; that lay persons can handle the method; that mathetic information about an intern's behavior-in-ministry can be gathered and displayed to aid the process; that further field-testing seems warranted by the findings. It challenges assumptions and establishes a theological and psychological rationale for church loyalty, setting forth a detailed, systematic definition which delineates three degrees of church loyalty, identified as eros (self-gratification), philia (approval of community), and agape (sacrificial) types of loyalty, and sharply distinguishing the absence of loyalty from disloyalty which is viewed as destructive and unresponsive. Leis, the author, assumes that the church has been called by God to be a seedbed and spawning ground for stories.
