A survey of new members added to a congregation over a four-year period reveals that more than 90 percent joined and were baptized as a result of attending the class. In the class the participants' stories become the stories of those who share them in reading and hearing. The author's belief is that this is best accomplished by viewing discipleship ministry through the lens of pastoral care.  The focus in this project is upon training church members (disciples) to provide meaningful initial interaction (discipling) with new members (disciples) which flows from an understanding of discipleship that is wholistic. This means that those who are not part of the dominant family are often treated as 'outsiders'.  The assumption of this thesis is that the members need to experience a shift in their thinking so that God's spiritual family, the church, becomes central to their lives rather than the biological family.  The greatness of God's spiritual family is in its power to transform people's lives and unite them as one people.
