Chapters one to three include a presentation and analysis of the Statement of Values, an assessment of the Statement through relevant interviews and a study of chaplaincy itself.  Chapters four through seven take a biblical perspective which, unlike psychological and sociological perspectives, has been neglected in the past and should contribute greatly to the shaping of the vision and role of chaplaincy. This method involved groups of clergy and laity in the preparation and evaluation of a series of sermons preached by the author over several months. (Sermon videotapes were used to facilitate the clergy evaluation).  The author hypothesized that this method would produce measurable improvement in the oral communication, biblical interpretation and relevance of his preaching and that such improvement would substantiate the viability of the method.
