dialogical teaching can transform a sense of hopelessness to a condition of hope. Believing that hope is rooted in an experiential encounter with God, this thesis first examines inaugural eschatology with its multi-dimensional view of the resurrection, i.e. the past event, the future promise, and the present reality, and contrasts it with dispensational eschatology. As a means to foster experiential encounters with God, this project used the celebrative narrative preaching design of Henry Mitchell and Frank Thomas. The design was contextualized for a primarily Anglo Baptist congregation in southern Oregon. The methodology applied reveals that while celebration has cultural traits depending upon context, it also has a biblical and theologically precedence and warrants being experienced by every Christian community.  This work aims to establish that there are spiritual benefits and advantages associated with both cognitive and emotive celebration. The goal of this project is to critically examine, define, and detail one of those new methods called 'Prescriptive Preaching' whose goal is to provide its listener with explicit and helpful actions, prescribed and exemplified in a specific biblical narrative, which empower and equip the listener to cope with a relevant life issue. This methodology is currently being successfully used in the preaching life of St. John's Congregational Church, a 1,300 member black church comprised mainly of this new generation of black churchgoers. Through reflection on the creation, delivery, and evaluation of eight project sermons, the integration of residency course work, and committed discussion on the same with St. John's members in a Parish Project Group this project seeks to discover and establish the guidelines, goals, theological, biblical, and homiletical foundations and exegesis, and preparatory process that informs the methodology of prescriptive preaching. The project prepares and presents three sermons 'beyond words' to churched and to unchurched persons. Each group evaluates the sermons in a group setting and participates in personal interviews. Five out of seven members of the unchurched group experience significant encounters with God.
