The project goals included: (a) develop a Christian model of the strong and healthy families; (b) assess the families of Big Jackson Church of God in light of the model; (c) develop an approach to family based on the model and assessment, using a pilot ministry to test the approach.  The research discloses that the church can minister to the families of the twenty-first century. The premise of this study is that the church, in its attempt to reach its community, must be prepared to embrace people from all cultures.  To accomplish that goal, the context was carefully studied, sources on cultural diversity were assembled for theological reflection, a methodology for a ministry project was devised, and a ministry project was undertaken, which was followed by a comprehensive evaluation of the ministry project. Chaplains and laity received small group ministry training at the Air Force Singles Conference.  Surveys conducted immediately before and after the training disclosed a positive shift in their attitude toward small groups as an effective means of providing spiritual care and stimulating spiritual growth. This means that those who are not part of the dominant family are often treated as 'outsiders'.  The assumption of this thesis is that the members need to experience a shift in their thinking so that God's spiritual family, the church, becomes central to their lives rather than the biological family.  The greatness of God's spiritual family is in its power to transform people's lives and unite them as one people. This study describes the response of an African American Baptist congregation when given an opportunity to compare and contrast the preaching of the new and postmodern homiletic which is inductive, narrative, and non-authoritarian, to the preaching tradition of the African American church, which is largely deductive and authoritarian.  The most important conclusion reached in this study is that the major determinant in sermonic satisfaction was not an issue of form. A sequence of learning events were developed for their spiritual growth and leadership skills.  A Pro-Active Research Method and the Reflection-Action Model helped the pastor and leaders analyze the congregation's needs which led to action plans for proclamation and social services.  The Research Model afforded the pastor and leaders to make decisions based on their assessment of community needs. The project sought to gain information by giving a force field analysis survey to ten Assembly of God churches.  From their response to the survey relevant curricula could be developed to prepare people for urban ministry.  The project demonstrated favorable results as the survey was given successfully.
