The practicum examines the issues of school dropout. Additionally, it examines the role of the community and church in their impact on the prevention of the issue of school dropouts. The practicum was conducted over a six-week period of time. A group of ten laypersons was recruited from Porter Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Dallas, Texas. The group met each Saturday during the six-week period to discuss practical and theological positions for meeting needs in the South Dallas community. The main goal was to explore concrete ways the church could work in the community to aid in the school dropout problem. The group decided to offer a tutorial program to address the academic needs of the student. The group also decided to address issues of spiritual formation with the student. The goal is equipping members of this church for evangelistic outreach. An assumption is that evangelism must draw its fundamental content and inspiration from the early community that gave birth to its initial efforts. I Peter is used as a paradigm for evangelistic strategy. Attention is given to the theological foundation for evangelism. This is compared to the theological emphasis that traditionally has driven Churches of Christ. The practicum was developed as a workshop on evangelism presented to leaders of a small group ministry in the Granbury Church of Christ. Shared praxis was the pedagogical method used. The main goal proved to be too ambitious for this task. A corporate myth was discovered that characteristically paralleled the plot of the medieval narrative, the Quest for the Holy Grail."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127163687141376,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:39:33.426Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:36:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:41:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d6017257-1af3-4da7-bd59-87614616a16b","accessControl_ssim":["ec5c1f2f-c57f-4e71-adf8-4951948a78bf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Resourcing new members in order to maximize their living the Gospel and minimize their inactivity"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:36:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:14:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7152f588-c08c-4c1d-a4a7-3e49a8df4d99"],"hasLease_ssim":["79e5ea14-6e8a-4e1b-9503-721348b350b0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["William J Abraham"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Roderick D Clark"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["Assimilation (Sociology)","Church membership"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project, conducted during a three-month period, was an attempt to offset trends toward inactive church membership by developing a theologically and sociologically relevant training process for new members. Eight weekly sessions were conducted involving twelve recent candidates for membership. Individual pre-training and post-training interviews with questionnaires were conducted to provide information as to any changes in interest, attitude and/or understanding of the meaning of church membership. Training sessions included a grounding in the six major dimensions of the Christian faith and the meaning of living the gospel. Through this project it was not possible to determine whether the training process would or would not prevent these new members from becoming inactive. The new members definitely increased their understanding of the faith. Interest and enthusiasm was engendered for more study of scripture and the mission of the church. The project also pointed up new directions for our ministry, i.e., the need for a well-planned, total faith-sharing program complete with training workshops, faith-sharing Sundays, and followup."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127266851291136,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:41:11.811Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:36:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:37:19Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8e8e2a8c-6728-4427-98b4-69658891a6c7","accessControl_ssim":["77db0363-5c85-4033-976f-3d741261b243"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Kavanaugh 2000: developing long-range congregational goals and assessing pastoral leadership skills in response to a...changing community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:36:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:18:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["652f9e4b-f0c9-425c-a025-9a298881720c"],"hasLease_ssim":["a74ffd80-ac86-4bdf-a383-b25e7dd40c8b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Stanley J Menking"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Larry W George"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["Mission of the church","Planning"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project was developed to address the need of Kavanaugh United Methodist Church (Greenville, Texas) to establish long-range goals and assess pastoral leadership skills for mission and ministry. The setting for this practicum is a 1200-member United Methodist Church in a county seat town of 25,000 in the Arkansas Delta. Using the structure as mandated by the Discipline of the United Methodist Church, a task force was formed and charged with creating the design and its implementation. The practicum was conducted over a six-month period with the task force meeting with the pastor for an extensive period of six weeks. The task force, using a shared praxis approach, dealt with issues related to faith development for both preschool children and adults.
