The project addresses three questions. Do sacred rites and rituals contribute to the healing that occurs in the pastoral counseling relationship? How are sacred rites and rituals therapeutic?  Under what circumstances do rites and rituals bring healing?  Five counseling cases from the author's pastoral counseling practice are presented and analyzed using a qualitative methodology. The hypothesis is that within the disciplined practice of pastoral psychotherapy, experiences of a religious quality emerge in ways which effect significant change and healing in a person's emotional life.  The project of defining and using a model of pastoral psychotherapy is conceived as a theological appropriation of a secular theory of psychotherapy as practiced in clinical cases of pastoral psychotherapy.
